Ello,

In the last few days there's been a weird smell coming from the PC which i've isolated down to the GPU (1080TI which was bought new several years ago).

It smells like burning plastic which worries me. Temps are all fine, machine has no issues gaming and i cannot see anything obviously wrong on the card, but the smell at times can be strong. Just wondering if anyone has experienced something like this before and if i should be worried about it and looking to replace it asap?

Are you 100% certain it's your GPU?

It could be your motherboard or it could be PSU. It could even be a piece of cable touching some hot area (like CPU heatsink).

I've replaced the power supply with a brand new one (yesterday) and the smell is still coming out. I guess the mobo is an option which was brand new end of July. The reason i was confident it was the GPU was because i've replaced everything else and if you take the card out, the smell is very potent on the card (cant identify it on any other items in the case)

mobo is gigabyte b550 aorus elite. I guess it could be where the gpu is touching a part of of the mobo?

I think I would get another cheap graphics card , second hand very cheap. Tenner? And put it in and then see if smell goes. Could it be the pci interface? I would do this.
Can't be too careful with potential fire in your pc.

Never removed the shroud before but will give it ago. Assume I just need to remove the small screws going around the edge of the plastic?

Take a good clear and high resolution photo of the GPU if you can with the shroud off - then upload it so others can take a look.

How old is it? Still under warranty by chance?

Most cards are 3 years, some 4-5 years depends on the AIB.

Bought it through Overclockers in Q12017. Will check if there’s any but might have passed.

temps maxed at 63 during furmark

What exact brand and edition is your 1080 Ti? e.g. Gigabyte 1080 Ti Gaming OC

Can usually find out warranty by brand/model if you check the relevant website.

You may be in luck, potentially... Gigabyte for that model offer 3yrs or 4yr warranty if registered with them.

Do you know if you registered the card with GB? Either way I’d get in contact with Gigabyte and see if you can file an RMA. If you didn’t register it and they try reject the claim, I’d try appeal to the morale side as really there shouldn’t be a reason to reject it otherwise!

@GIGA-Man may be able to help if you provide him the serial number. But he’s not always about so may be best logging a ticket anyway.

Tried a new GPU and its still an issue which i guess brings it back to a potential mobo issue.. Could it be because the card sits directly on top of the highlighted item (there's no gap between the card)

I have the same thing in the other mobo so could explain why it was still an issue when i swapped to my old mobo. The smell isn't constant, it comes and goes (most noticeable when i'm gaming).

To add, i've tried 3 psus (one being completely new) while also switching the case and RAM so im certain it's not them.
