NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

But let’s keep the price ramped up...

AMD really have to bring something to the game if we want prices to settle at a more reasonable place.

My 1080Ti was ~$700 at launch, *years ago*. That same price point is going much, much faster now. (Just looking at the DF video posted)

It looks like more than a 30% improvement per generation, at the same price point.

I have been one of Nvidia's biggest critics with Turing, but it looks like Ampere has caught Nvida back up to where they should be at this point on the generational time-line...and then some.

I think they needed to do this, let's face it the previous generation which introduced RT was way ahead of the available consoles but the new consoles means Nvidia has to give some value back. I don't think this is about AMD although I suspect they will also have a competitive product - more about Nvidia trying to provide a better experience than the next gen consoles for a reasonable sum of money. Even at £649 this graphics card isn't cheap, but is it good enough to display graphics better than a £500 console? This seems to be the case and for those that need better resolution and framerate it's now £1399 for the 3090 (which I suspect might be where the x80 cards used to sit a few gens ago).

It's a decent performance leap but I suspect we might see a further performance leap this time next year on a smaller node etc to keep up with the consoles.

If the 3090 was about £1,000 I would buy it.

But now I have to factor in a new power supply...and I'm tight with my cash :)

I love how people are jumping at the 3090 after a reveal that (a) showed it anyone just as expensive as feared, and (b) showed a bunch of random interest celebs (or something) screaming in a video. There was generally nothing new in the reveal other than an unsupported claim of 8k@60fps. Surprising shift in opinions - it's almost as if the marketing worked...

Thing is all current benchmarks we have (One video from DF) is taking about performance in current gen games. We do not know how these cards will actually perform in next gen games.

What looks great now might look ordinary once the consoles and next gen games launch.

I think in fairness its the 3080 most of us are interested in.
