NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

I'm not sure it's sensible from nV's POV. If you don't allow reviews until release day, then you guarantee (if you are nV) that you will get masses and masses of pre-orders from everyone terrified of FOMO.

Even people that aren't sure they want one will pre-order to just to be sure they can get one :p

If you have reviews coming into the mix, they might actually cause some people to stop and think if it's actually the card they need.

Given that nVidia is like Apple (and not like AMD), not having reviews until the very last minute might even be helpful.

Bottom line is, they will generate untold pre-orders on the strength of Jensen's demo and on their name and on the hype.

Reviewers might spoil the party!

True dat. True dat. Luckily coming from a 1080ti, having a g sync monitor and having seen digital foundry test the games I play or want to play against the 2080 with a 70-80% I'm more than happy to order based on that tbf. It'll be give or take that range, at least 50% increase worst case, and that's what I'm looking for in all fairness.

These cards look awesome on paper, but I have a horrible feeling I might have to end my ten year mini-itx stint if I want to jump from my 980Ti to a 3000 series. Is it just the 3090 that eats three slots? It's tricky to tell from the shop listing photos.

Do you guys think the 3090 graphics cards requires a support bracket to hold it up in the case, like we used to have in the good ole days?

probably not a bad idea. I still have the one for my case somewhere.

Yes get your LEGO figure ready :D
Say what now? Is that a thing? I need pictures!

My bigger concern is the dumb MSI x570ACE with the impossible-to-install middle mounting screw that's covered by the silly chipset heatsink overspill. The weight of these cards pulling around that area and no screw to restrain the mobo?! Not ideal IMO. I can try getting a screw in there with some tweezers but don't like the thought of potentially snagging some board components - not to mention the nigh-on impossible task of ever getting the thing out again!

3080 and 3070 are dual slot. 3070 is 220w and would be my beat for itx.

I think the theory is you're less likely to return something you've bought.

By buying it, you become invested in it, and only if there are serious problems would you go through the hassle of returning it.

If it's just "I'm not sure if I want this," then you're much more likely to keep it once you've bought it.

Vs reading reviews and not buying in the first place.

There's a whole branch of behavioural science dedicated to stuff like this.

To be frankly honest I've used a very well know competitor and the 30 day returns policy to test out all manner of items. Monitors, cameras, graphics cards. They so after all have a no quibbles return, even returned some items on day 29.
Dont feel the slightest bit guilty with the absolute slave labour that said company put the staff through....

To be honest I don't really want the 3080 10gb, and I don't really want the 3090 24gb either.
So come on Nvidia just give us the RTX 3080Ti already... we have waited long enough.
we will see it again my friend, just not yet. Not yet.... https://www.techpowerup.com/271676/lenovo-lists-geforce-rtx-3070-ti-with-16gb-gddr6-memory

Wonder if my 11 year old Corsair TX950W will cope well with a 3080 or 3090? It's so old it's not even modular and has seen everything from 8800 GTS 256 SLI, through 580 SLI, 780ti, all the way up to my current 1080.

I'm probably jumping the gun here but as someone who works away from home now and again I have both a gaming desktop and laptop, so I'm also really looking forward to when (if) the 3xxx series hits laptops. If their laptop gpu's end up being in line with regards to price/performance as their desktop lineup, then in a few months those £2k plus 2080 equipped gaming laptops should plummet in price, handy for folks like myself (and many tears for those that actually bought them).

The only problem with that is that you will, inevitably, push prices up by doing this.

I mean obviously you as a single person won't have much effect, but they will know how many people do the same, and then they will price this into the cost of the items they sell.

So the more people that do what you're doing, the more prices will go up to compensate.

e: It's like the cost of insurance. Insurance companies price everything in. They have detailed stats on risk and on behaviours. The more people make/win claims, the more the cost of the insurance goes up (etc).

Its gonna give up the ghost one day my friend lol. Would plan a phase it to the backup/spare rig myself and treat yourself to a new one to support the £800+ piece of hardware tbh.
