NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

You see I could have gone along with this until you see every AIB has 3 or more variations and there is even an all pink one called "gaming girl".

Yeah, they're clearly marketing it at gamers. They know a bunch of people that want a 3080 Ti will convince themselves to just buy a 3090 instead.

At this price it's easy for me to keep it only 2 years and buy the 4080 next time if it's any good. Likely be able to purchase both for less than the price of a 3090.
I feel the same. At these prices it becomes a little more manageable to update every 2 years. I'm ok with "only" having 10GB of RAM even if they end up bringing out a 16GB / 20GB (or whatever) version, or even Ti / Super variants in the interim, especially as I don't intend to game in 4K in that period. The base performance is - on paper - more than good enough for me at 1440p.

Yeh, i'm still scheptical to be honest. I'm considering flinging my 2080Ti on the bay (as i'm sure many are) due to the rumours of "the 3070 matching 2080Ti performance" and "The 3080 being 2x as fast as the 2080Ti"
Heard it before though and turned out to be total BS
2x as fast as the 2080 and not the Ti.

What AIBs do with them is another matter. It is mostly marketing anyhow.

The main take for me is that the 3080 is much closer to a top end product versus what could be expected - since Kepler all too often the x80 card was at least 30% down on what was realistically top end specs versus what was possible - often 40% or worse - whereas the 3080 is generally just inside 20% behind, in some cases 25% aside from VRAM amount which is skimping it.

Surely a 2080ti is fast enough for the foreseeable future? Surely the sensible thing to do would be keep it and make use of it for a couple of years? Rather than take a huge hit selling it?

I really don't understand some people. Just seem to want to part with their money

Crazy.

All depends what you are doing. If you are gaming at 4k like me and have been struggling for the last 4 years waiting for gfx cards to catch up, then yes I will gladly take the hit on my two 2080ti and go with a new 3 series.

Which is why I am even considering the 3090. It may only be 20% faster than the 3080 but that might mean the difference between 50fps and a nice steady 60fps at 4k.

Surely 3080 is a steady 60fps in 4k anyway?

Nvidia are claiming the 3080 can do that though. I do think that it is a bit OTT going for a 3090 unless you are gonna use it for professional use as well.

Better to get a 3080, pocket the change and then upgrade again to a 4000 series when it's out or even a 3080 super with more ram if needed.

Of course it's your money and you do what you like with it.

Yes i dont understand why the 3080 is so power hungry and the 3090 is so big yet it only uses 20watts more?

3080 is largely salvaged spec from the same core so likely there are areas where the power use is very similar regardless - the 3090 may be power limited as well - have to see what actual testing shows for power draw.

If they're happy with 2 year old performance then surely they would have bought 2 year old performance from the start to save their money?

Some people like to dedicate more of their income to their hobbies than others.

Also some people are high earners so a high end GPU may cost them just one week's wages.
