Long overdue upgrade - 3080/3090 small form factor?

Hi All,

it's time to retire my 4790k system/RTX 2080 Ti Combo and build a new system.

I have a fascination with small form factor builds and wondered if anyone knows if putting one of these bad boys in a small form factor PC is possible (ideally 3090)?

I wanted to wait for Ryzen 4000 but I can't wait.

I was going to go for:
Asus Strix X570 Mini-ITX
Ryzen 7 3700 (upgrade to 4000 later)
32GB 3600 DDR4
Re-using my 2TB Samsung 850 SSD

I need help deciding on PSU, Case and Storage (NVMe).

Thanks in advance

You really need to decide what case you want because that will dictate size limitations, etc.

I was thinking about the NZXT H1, but my understanding is that the PSU in it won't be powerful enough and apparently airflow isn't ideal... Something in a similar vein would be great...

Those cards will be quite huge (to be able to cool that 320W/350W) so likely not very small case friendly.

I was thinking about the NZXT H1
GPU Clearance:
  • Dimension - 305mm x 128mm; 265mm x 145mm
  • Thickness - Up to 2.5 Slots
That's no go for the biggest cards.

Thanks guys so I'm now thinking to go for a bigger case and settle for a 3080. To that end I'm thinking Corsair 280X RGB and 3080 Founders edition.

Is the CPU good enough? I'm just going to game on it, no other work...

Great I'm going to upgrade to a 4000 series later anyway! With PS5 and Series X going for crazy fast SSD's anything I need to focus on for the NVMe boot drive I need to select? Thanks

If you have the budget go for a Sabrent 4.0 1TB

If you pick the corsair case the this psu will fit had a 10 year warranty.

Boom Thank you sirs.

Parts list:
Corsair 280X RGB Case
Corsair RM850 PSU
Asus Strix X570 Mini-ITX
32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3600Mhz (Do I need to get faster?)
Sabrent 4.0 1TB NVMe boot/Current game drive (not on OC website?)
Ryzen 3700X (will upgrade to 4000 series on release)
Nvidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition

Parts to re-use
Samsung 850 2TB SSD (additional storage)

EDIT: seeing as I'm going for a bigger case now, might be an idea to get a 6-10TB HDD for storage - anyone have any recommendations there?

What you gonna do about cpu cooling or will you stick with the stock cooler?

Oops, good point - I'll use an AIO cooler H100i? Shame it has a silver accent, ideally a totally black one with RGB would be ideal...

EDIT: Just noticed the RTX 3080 also has silver accents so that works fine then!

Why have you gone for a 3900xt thought you was getting 3700x ?

If you get the founders edition 3080 it will come with a 12 pin power connector to 2 x 8 pin . So I'm not sure your rgb cables would be wasted.

Could go for a diffrent 3080 with rgb the zotac 3080 looks a good offering.

Figured might as well go one CPU up, probably means I won't need to worry about upgrading in a few months...

As for that GPU I don't think it fits in the case?
