Update: Resurrected, please see my new post on page 2

Good evening all,

Please provide me with your sage wisdom and guidance. I'd like to get my daughter her own computer for her 18th birthday. As she is autistic she is not playing the same kinds of games a normal 18 year old would play - mainly Minecraft and Roblox at the moment. This could obviously change in the future so some performance headroom would be good.

I'm not looking to completely scrimp on the system so my ceiling budget would be around £1200 but as this is a system from scratch it would have to include a monitor etc.

I have trawled through a couple of pages of posts reading recommendations but the system I feel my daughter needs does not quite fit in the with what the majority are looking for. Saying that, I do have a number of items in my wish list. I am fine with building it myself and installing W10 as I am reasonably savvy with PCs but as I am still running my OC i5 I am a little bamboozled with the new options.

Many thanks in advance.

Just to check are you looking for mouse, keyboard and headset or speakers in this £1200 budget as well?

I'd probably go for something like the below... Very decent B550 board with wifi if needed, believe it's been compared to same VRMs as B450 Tomahawk Max. I've spec'd just system + monitor (no GPU) I've listed as other peripherals I'm sure you can sort. :p

Key thing to decide is what sort of GPU you think she'll need? Roblox will run on any crappy system... Minecraft only needs a fairly low-end GPU. So you could just get something used from the MM and save some money? A lot of really decent GPUs flying around with next-gen announced. Like RX580 around £90, or if you want to future proof fairly well grab a 5700 XT for £300 region I see someone is selling atm in there. Another just sold for £280 too which is a great price. I doubt she'll need the power of next-gen Nvidia 3000 series GPUs anytime soon... :D

P.S. You can get the 3600 CPU for £35 less elsewhere. Silly Ryzen pricing round here atm. The rest is solid and well priced though.

Edit: Just to add, the below spec is basically a great 1080p system with any of the above named GPUs... Even 1440p if you went for something like used 5700 XT or similar. With scope to upgrade CPU/GPU later on, should her needs become more 'intense' if you initially start her with something like the RX580 which is still great for 1080p. :)

If you are asking where the Memebers Market is its probably safe to say you dont have access to it sadly :( The requirements changed a few years ago.

Also how keen are you on upgrading some components in maybe 2 years if the build is in budget now?

good spec that. I'd swap the monitor for a dell IPS like the U2419 but then I value the colour space and calibration settings for photoediting more than high-Hz gaming spec.

The members market is where you can buy and sell .

You need a 1000 posts to acess the members market of overclockers forum.

Requirements were 250 posts back in the day so if he got access years ago he would still retain it but safe to say he probably doesnt have access

Ah balls is it 1000 posts for MM access? Just saw OP been registered a while and thought he’d have access. :p Still, look on other areas like AVForums classifieds for used. Or anywhere else tbh.

If you can’t find a good used card and you end up new, then a 1650 Super for £150-160 is a good entry level GPU for Minecraft and 1080p gaming... But I’d try keep a look and out grab one of the cards I mentioned used to save yourself some money. The used GPU market is becoming rife atm :)

I don’t think your use case quite fits into OPs kids needs when gaming :p

Your daughters pc is gonna be better than yours.:p

@Sparx don't you think that system is overkill for the games the young lady are playing.

3200g would cope with them.

Yeah I already explained it’s basically a great 1080p gaming system. But OP wants a decent rig for her to expand her horizons is what I gathered. So if she starts to delve into more graphic intense games, she can no problem. :)

I’d personally start with a used RX580, 1650 Super or similar in that region.

Possibly but not likely unless she was unable to play some new game that this system was not able to handle.

743 posts to go then! I read the forums every day but don't post often.

She wont get to use it dad will be playing triple AAA games. ;)

I've had a stab. As mentioned above you can get the R5 3600 for £35 less elsewhere so there is a saving and brings this down to £1207. I would buy a windows key for £10 too as an additional cost.

Also gotta give your daughter some RGB for her first PC, it would be a crime without it :D

Note:

Few changes from someone elses build. Faster Ram as ryzen loves fast RAM, and zero benefit for using a NVME drive over a normal SSD for her uses so gone with a good old WD blue SSD. Also p300A is a strong case for the money with more than the 1 stock fan in it

Not trying to say he should swap it. Just putting it in the mix depending on how long he wants this set up to last her, and whether there might be other considerations in future.

Lots of great advice - plenty to mull over so thank you.

I'll put together the shopping list tomorrow and post for critiquing. Bed time, got to be up in 6 hours.:(

Get some sleep, no sleep makes idle purchases lol.

Also re the spec i posted, if you wanted to shave some off, you could swap for non RGB PWM fans and maybe change the monitor for https://www.overclockers.co.uk/hann...sync-widescreen-gaming-monitor-mo-003-hs.html. Still a 144hz monitor but TN instead of IPS and £50 cheaper

I would say false economy that provided you can afford IPS I would get one over TN any day of the week. TN panels just look bland once you've gone IPS you won't go back to washed-out dulls. That said, if it makes the budget work it's not the end of the world.

When choosing the graphics card do you think Freesync is something I really need to be concerned about? At the moment I am thinking about going with this:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...ddr6-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-441-as.html

If necessary, I can upgrade it further down the line. Its also 20% off at the moment.

Is a £200 144hz monitor really needed for roblox, etc ?

The 1650 super is a good card for 1080p 5500xt is similar performance and will give you freesync.
