Yeap 295 and 690 were beasts but vram gimped them. I wouldn’t buy a 3080 unless your gaming at 1080p. Any higher than that then forget it. Obsolete in around 12-18 months.
The 8800GTS 320MB,HD6950 1GB,HD7850 1GB,GTX960 2GB and R9 380 2GB.
The 4GB versions of the latter GPUs despite their anaemic cores could use 4GB:

Also many defended the GTX1060 3GB,but despite only having a few percent more cores,the GTX1060 6GB is significantly ahead now in 2020:

I think the RTX3080 is OKish TBF at 10GB(which is 25% more than the RTX2080),but the RTX3070 is stingy at 8GB. The RTX3070TI is 16GB. It wouldn't surprise if AMD matches similar quantities though - the RX5600XT went backwards over their previous £200~£300 GPUs(8GB VRAM).
But as the idTech main dev said,8GB will be what is required as a minimum under 4K,in the next few years in their view.
