NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Yeap 295 and 690 were beasts but vram gimped them. I wouldn’t buy a 3080 unless your gaming at 1080p. Any higher than that then forget it. Obsolete in around 12-18 months.

The 8800GTS 320MB,HD6950 1GB,HD7850 1GB,GTX960 2GB and R9 380 2GB.

The 4GB versions of the latter GPUs despite their anaemic cores could use 4GB:
https://www.computerbase.de/2015-12...on-r9-380-fps-assassins-creed-unity-1920-1080

Also many defended the GTX1060 3GB,but despite only having a few percent more cores, the GTX1060 6GB is significantly ahead now in 2020:

I think the RTX3080 is OKish TBF at 10GB(which is 25% more than the RTX2080),but the RTX3070 is stingy at 8GB. The RTX3070TI is 16GB. It wouldn't surprise if AMD matches similar quantities though - the RX5600XT went backwards over their previous £200~£300 GPUs(8GB VRAM).

But as the idTech main dev said,8GB will be what is required as a minimum under 4K,in the next few years in their view.

VRAM Is a hard limit though which is hard to get around. If you run out of performance on the core there are many settings you can drop but with VRAM it's only textures and resolution really.

My 2gb Gtx 680 ran out of VRAM before I was unhappy with the performance I was getting so I won't be making that mistake again.

100% true. Many people just don't want to accept it. Same arguments as have been had at many other releases, like you've mentioned. VRAM is tied for #1 together with chip power in terms of GPU requirements.

Nonetheless I'm fine going for the 3080 because I am looking at the release calendar for the next 2 years and am not seeing any games I want to play which would push the vram that hard (which don't also have DLSS). So I'll take the gamble. I know I'm going to be annoyed when I don't wait & a month or two later a 20GB variant gets released tho lol.

Just because the thread goes so fast, is anyone able to offer insight on the below? Will I be able to go with a 3090 or a 3080 without issues? I’m just worried with the OC and a 3090 that I’ll have issues with a 750w psu.

With my spec in the spoilers do you think I'll be ok to run one of the new cards? Would I get bottle necked going for a 3090 if it would fit or should I go for a 3070 or 3080 based on my PSU? Also it may sound stupid, obviously I'm going to need another power thing going in to the GPU, do I just buy an additional one or would the power be hidding somewhere inside the case if that makes sense.

Thanks

Dang it.. :D

Thanks for not completely ripping in to me for that!!

It happens to be my Birthday on the 17th, so will have to pre-order one as a pressie to myself (the best kind!)

Damn. It’s my birthday on the 24th, you know what that means!

You should be fine with a 750w for the 3080, how old is the PSU?

What resolution do you game at?

just hope my pci express 3.0 @16x and my 8700k @ 5.0ghz does not bottle neck my 3090 when i get it lol

I have a superflower 2000w 8pack edition psu so im not to worried about power :)
i wonder if @8pack will contact superflower to see if he can get custom longer 12pin power connector for this psu...

---

I have my eyes on the Strix 3090 or gigabyte extreme 3090 :D

EDIT: has anyone seen these new cards from colorful or igame they look pretty :D

https://gadgetpilipinas.net/2020/09/colorful-launches-its-rtx-3090-rtx-3080-rtx-3070-graphics-cards/

like the liquid cooled versions of the 3090 they also have this flip up display model lol

Folks. Why go for a FE edition as opposed the ones with beefier fans from ROG, MSI etc etc?

The 3-fan systems dump all the GPU heat into the case. With the new higher TDP's, this is going to be more heat than what my 1080ti is currently dumping into the case.

The FE cards dump some of the heat *outside* of the case. They may have found a way to get some of the benefit of a blower cooler (with half the cooler) while not sacrificing the coolers overall effectiveness. (With the other half)

It looks like a blower/downdraft hybrid that could have benefits over either.

I prefer the look of the FE.
Also having an Air 240 mATX case means I need to be careful of the height. The FE 3080 will fit fine but some of the 3rd party offerings stand way too tall

I think the cards are meant to come with an adapter in the box - but of course if you have braided cables or an aesthetic you want to keep you'll want a matching cable, particularly as the GPU one is usually the most visible.

I see the founders edition 3080 says it coms free with the new watch dogs game.

Does anyone know if the ones from ocuk will also include the game?

hey mate, thanks for the reply. I have a Super Flower Leadex II 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply which is 3 years old. My 7700k is Overclockers to 4.9. Also I game at 1440p.
Thanks

Won’t bother me dude got no plans for 4K I’ll be on 1080p 144hz

I wish the card did come free with the game... A 3080 for £40 would be lovely

Yes, Watchdogs comes free with all 30 series cards (or so I've read) :)

When is the new AMD gpu supposed to be out?

I got Watchdogs 1 and 2 for free, never actually played them yet.

It's nice getting a good game for free when buying a new card but I'd still buy the card regardless of any free games.
