NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

4K is mainstream... Even the new consoles are 4k60 enabled........

1080P is extreme peasant level gaming. 1440P is border-level peasant level what with the new consoles making 4K gaming ubiquitous.

I wouldn't really say that most PC gamers, I know prefer gaming at 1440p with much higher frame rates than the extra detail available in 4K.

What do people normally do around stock v Oc'd cards? Do you buy stock and overclock it yourself? Is there any value in buying a pre-oc'd card?

Since the 1080ti there is been no good reason to buy ther pre OC'd cards as the stock cards have as much chance of overclocking to a higher speed than the pre-oc'd cards.

However, its all to with the thermals and cooling and silicon lottery. The better the cooler on your card, the higher your card ran.

So you could have bog standard stock cards performing better than £500+ more expensive pre-oc cards.

So pick one with one of the better coolers and better warranties and then cross your fingers for the silicon lottery.

And almost every board manufacturer gives you an app for adjusting your clockspeed anyway.

And it is. In at least one game with certain settings which result in the 2080 under-performing by 20%. Thats all Nvidia need to show.

Its like if ferrari brought out a car that claimed to be twice as fast as a Bugatti veyron. So long as there was some test somewhere like it was only twice as fast on an ice lake, it wouldnt matter. They could legally claim its twice as fast.

Even if its 0-60 time and top speeds were only 10% faster.

The problem is that there's no asterisk, there are no caveats at all on that slide. Just one big statement of it being twice as fast.

Car comparison isn't really viable because both statements you said are twice as fast in one single thing. Nvidia have stated the 3080 is flat out twice as fast as the 2080 in everything.

Buy stock & OC it yourself. The value in pre-OC cards are usually only if they also have beefier heatsinks, higher powerlimits, a 2nd bios etc. If it's same model but comes with pre-OC, then that's worthless imo.

I too was debating whether going for a version with a higher oc.

More specifically the aorus master or extreme. The heatinks are the same, but the more oc'd version has 3x8 pins for the power vs 2x8pins. You think the additional 1x8 pin power connector would make a difference?

So the 30 series show's its gains at higher resolutions and you don't have the monitor to run it? Well sir, let me introduce you to 'super sampling' because that **** is awesome!

But they havent. The slide doesnt say "everything" and doesnt say "all the time"

It's in Nvidia's own slides. Check any site that covered it.

They also have one saying up to which makes more sense. They should not be saying twice the performance unless it really is. Will be interesting to see how it pans out on Monday then.

I am sure it is twice the performance in some metrics, but unless it is in games, they are stretched the truth a bit too much. Weird as they used up to 2x in other slides.

They said both - 'up to 2x 2080' then later 'twice the performance as 2080'...

Yea, wonder why they did that. Was the context of what was being said during the twice as fast bit different? Like were they talking about RT or something else?

It's inconsistent/misleading wording which is sloppy from their marketing guys, but it's clear from everything they have shown in all of their material that they really mean "up to" because the performance is obviously not 2x the 2080 in all applications.

Not so much sloppy, they knew exactly what they was doing, Clever marketing to an unsuspecting buyer.

A bit like when the law came out for ISPs to state up to Xmpbs for their internet speed.

They're basically covering their ass because they know it won't be twice as fast in everything.

Twice the performance of the 2080
Upto 2x the performance of the 2080 Super

Maybe they missed the "super" off ? :)

You wont know until reviews.

I have bought high end custom boards before and despite the fact its used top of the range japanese capacitors and has had extra power pins and then further extra and better power chokes and it still didnt overclock any better than a bog standard board with a similar cooler.

Who knows. I will believe it when I see it on Monday.

I will be watching both Hardware Unboxed and Tech Jesus. Followed by looking at TPU results.
