as a provious 2080ti owner i'm torn over which card to get, the 3080 is a decent unplif in leaked benchmarks and i have a 4k display, i do have the cash for the 3090 and i know that thing should shread at 4k, problem is the rumored lack of stock on release date for both.
what should i do?
If performance is crap with RT on it will be going straight off for me anywayI believe they call it the Next Gen series due to them expecting many more games with Ray Tracing coming, I know there's not many RT games around at the moment, but even coming "soon" there's Watch Dogs Legion, Cyberpunk 2077, Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines, Dying Light 2, Atomic Heart, Witcher 3 upgrade. These are the ones I know of, if you wanted to experience the "Next Gen" versions of these games with the Ray Tracing you would need an Ampere card (for decent frames)
You should buy a 3070 as well just to be safe.Same boat here.
I was set on the 3090 previously, but rumours of a performance uplift over the 3080 of as low as 15 percent (more so 20 to 25) have turned me off a bit. If they let it use lots more power maybe it will OC really well, but I've not heard anything about that yet.
Maybe buy a 3080 on launch, don't open it, and if amazing news comes out about 3090 and you can nab one, return the 3080?
I think that's what I'll do, although I don't expect the 3090 to deliver enough for me to pay an extra 700 quid.

Why does the 3090 need to be so much bigger then a 3080 for only an extra 30 watts power draw ?![]()

Seems you are projecting or not understanding what I am saying. You need to look at the context of what things were said in. When I say 4K gets the most out of the card, I think it is pretty clear in the context of looking at those graphs that 4K has the biggest gains and letting the card stretch its legs the most. In contrast when you look at the gains made on say 1080p relative to other cards you can clearly see it is not getting the most out of the card.Well getting the most out of it on a 60hz 4k screen? Maybe, otherwise maybe not depending on game and game settings and having a high hz screen i would not call "getting the most out of it" if FPS starts going into the 40's or 30's but each to his own.
Keep in mind it doesn't always work so well for every card, some configurations are more fiddly than others. Then there's risk to consider of messing with the card and installing it, which not everyone's comfortable with. And on top of that in Europe consumer protection is actually weaker than in the States when you take the card apart so you have more of a chance to be denied RMA. On top of it all - you can actually get, for ex. on a 2080 Ti, 2 Ghz boost clock with pretty much any of the air cooled variants and without the cards spinning like mad making lots of noise - so why bother? Lower temps are nice and all, but lower temps for the sake of lower temps is just vanity if performance is otherwise the same.I really don’t understand why people like the actual coolers any of these cards come with. They are all terrible really. Yes I know this is a sweeping statement - but - when you have seen an G12/AIO running at 45 degrees with the card boosting all day long at max frequency at 100% load with MSI afterburners power and temp limits at max, for a tiny 25 pound outlay plus an AIO, you won’t ever go back. Good news is you just use it again and again.
