What the odds of native 4k, 120fps with a RTX 3080

After purchasing a LG CX oled I would really like to take advantage of it. I would like native 4k 120fps to match the TVs res and refresh rate in games like Cyberpunk 2077. The RTX 3090 is tempting but spending that kind of money seems foolish for just gaming and making youtube videos.

You can always get there with a bit of tweaking. If you are talking about raw native 4K + max settings then no, unlikely to happen for many years for the simple reason that settings can seriously outpace any hardware developments. It's also very variable depending on the game. Of course, that's the dumb way to do things. If you do it the smart way with a proper settings mix + DLSS or dynamic resolution, then your chances are much, much better in 99% of games and you're also unlikely to be able to tell much of a difference either with "lower" settings.

Cyberpunk nope

Older games yes games i run at 4k 120fps are World of Tanks, Source games, PUBG but you need to lower a lot. Typically the only things set to max are the resolution, And texture quality. Everything else is either off or low. World of Tanks for example is a pretty game since the 1.0 update and i keep textures and terrain etc maxed out and simply turn off everything else. And i typically on a 2080ti range from 144fps minimum to 210fps.

But i never ever go below 144fps ever, Which is impressive since my CPU is a 4770k and my 2080ti is at 1960mhz boost.

Not likely at all for most games.

My 2080Ti will occasionally struggle to hit 4k/60hz (That's where G-sync on the OLED comes in handy) and a 3080 isn't going to be twice the power of a 2080Ti

Doom Eternal looks like it can pretty much do 4k/120hz on a 3090 though.

Same predicament brother. Have an OLED C9 and getting the 3080 for the 4k 120 goodness.

However being a PC gamer for a long time I will say its highly unlikely that the 3080 will do modern AAA at max settings 4K120.

BUT I will say you would comfortably get 4K60 for most modern titles (Cyberpunk/ Black ops/ RDR2) , with some well optimised titles getting 4K90 (Control, Ragnarok) and amazingly optimised games/esports games getting 4K120 (Doom Eternal, CSGO/Valorant).

Another big proviso, is that a lot of games really do not benefit much from max settings. There are a lot of settings that are overkill and completely Halve the frame rate for almost imperceptable differences (VXAO from ROTR and PCSS from Assassin Creed Syndicate come to mind). Most console settings will be aiming for a mix of medium and high settings, and so if you do your research or just go for the settings below max as a blanket rule, you will definitely see more titles achieve high frames than not.

Ive personally been compiling my own game performances and they are hovering at 50-70 at 4K depending on the titles (currently rocking a 2080). I will be pretty chuffed to get above 100 fps on average but I think everyone needs to temper their expectations.

Might happen for new games that are optimised to take advantage of 2nd FP32 unit in Ampere without stalling everything else: if a lot of cool new effects are essentially "free" on that uarch, then maybe the rest can be rendered nicely at 100+ fps.

100 or 110 or 119 - a lot less of a problem with adaptive sync support.

Very poor odds with games like Cyberpunk. Older games with no RTX should be fine.

We'll see in a few days who is able to run the Quake II RTX time demo with high global illumination in 4k at 120fps. I doubt it will even run it at 60fps, 40-50 is my guess.

4K120 on older titles. New stuff like cyberpunk 2077 won’t even get 4K60 unless you turn on dlss or something if you are after max settings.

so do use think its gonna be a disappointment ?
It is starting to look that way. But only based on what Jensen hyped it to be. But for someone like me who skipped turding and is getting more than 2080Ti performance for half the price, it ain’t that disappointing :p

It all depends on your view point in the end. Overall it does seem like Ampere may not be the big jump in architectural performance we expected and that it is designed for professionals first and gaming second, like Vega was. If nvidia actually design something separate for gamers in the future we will see a bigger boost like we saw with maxwell.

You can get 180 fps at 4k today with a RTX 2080 Ti in the original Far Cry.

loved to no how many cards they have i think they might be a lot of disappointed buyers when they sell out..

Disappointing or not, it will sell well on release anyway. Many will want the latest and greatest.

Only for people who (for some reason) assumed it would be twice as fast as Nvidia current flagship.
:D
It's ok, the 3070 is going to be as fast as the 2080Ti, the 3080 will therefore be 'loads' quicker
I hope I'll eat my words and the 3070 will be as fast as the 2080Ti. If it is it means cheaper upgrade options
