2014 Kia Sportage. I look after the car myself, quite anal about it.

MOT done at same garage every time, always passed no advisories.

This morning at 08:30 car goes in, due to COVID-19 I’m asked to wait outside, I do so as they have benches, I have my coffee cup flask and start watching YouTube.

1 hour later, a woman with a 17 year old Citroen drops her car off, her car is being tested after mine. We start chatting. Chap comes out.. I ask what the verdict is, it’s failed.

Genuinely quite shocked but ok, I ask what on. He says both rear indicators aren’t orange enough. They are a clear lens with an orange bulb. He explains that sunlight can wear the coating. Ok fair enough.

I go to car and put hazards on, hmm ....look orange to me, I turn around and the woman I was speaking to, who overheard my result said “They look orange to me” and I agree.

Garage chap stands there, then walks off after telling me I can buy 2 bulbs but I will need me to fit them myself because he’s guys are all busy, and he will re-pass it.

The design on the Kia is ridiculous. You have to remove the rear wheels and pull the arch trim off and have hands and arms of a child. I only have basic tools on me. 35 mins later, I’ve had enough, I’ve cut all my arms apart, covered in road dirt etc.

I go back into office, he asks me if I’ve changed them (I got 2 from him) and I lied....I said yep, he comes out, I put hazards on and he replies “that’s better, I’ll pass it now”

I get the failure cert and the pass cert, pay, then told him I hadn’t changed them...he’s on the back foot, telling me about lighting conditions in the workshop etc. I point out he also looked at them with the car parked outside and leave.

What’s most annoying is now the MOT history records a fail (Then pass) but I was hoping to maintain a flawless history. I guess I can’t have it removed?

I don't think that would affect sale value, anyone with half a brain, and is already savvy enough to bother checking the history will think nothing of it IMO.

Obviously very irritating behaviour by the garage.

As above i wouldn't give it a second thought for something like an indicator.

The missus last car had a failure due to headlight alignment. The guy had already aligned it and re-passed without even mentioning it to us. (i only knew about it after checking the mot site to see if it had been done yet).

Yeah, I’m not worried about re-sale, it’s a 6 year old Kia. Just my OCD that’s affected!

just feel aggravated by the garage to be honest.

Also can’t believe how difficult it is to do on a Kia, it’s almost easier to take the entire rear bumper off. Absolutely crazy.

Worth reporting to the DVSA just in case that garage has form.
If they're going to do it on something that's blindingly obvious like that what's to say they don't make mountains of cash out of the old "Your pads are down to the metal all the way round, we're happy to fit some new ones and pass it" line.

Even if they tell him to fit it himself?

Report them to the DVLA. And get someone else to check that they have actually done anything.

Still made money on the bulbs that were obviously not needed though.
There's a very small chance that they are dodgy and the guy was probably just having an off morning but if no one ever pulls them up on anything then it could be hiding a bigger problem.

Unless they actually did do that, not just speculating that they might, it is not something to report.

I rang the DVSA to discuss the FAIL record, they were really helpful. The failure record can be removed (By them) - but the garage have to be the one that contacts them to explain, so I've emailed the garage and asked them to contact the DVSA and have it removed. They normally reply quite quickly but if I've not heard by mid-next week I'll give them a call.

I've used the garage now for about 7 years, and up until today, they've always been brilliant. They have good online reviews and pride themselves of being part of the good garage scheme and several other similar schemes.

They have 3 MOT lanes and despite being an independent, they're quite big.

Hopefully my OCD will be put out of its misery soon, and the car will have a flawless pass history by next week!

Do you still live in Hoo?
If so...mind sharing what garage, if it was local? If you'd prefer not to publicly name and shame, no worries, I would just like to keep a mental note to avoid :p

And I can sympathise, something like that would trigger me, too. I'd feel like the MOT tester had it in for me and was trying to intentionally ruin a clean sheet :d

They just rang me.

Let’s just say we had a bit of a disagreement. He said we did you a favour by passing it, and seemed incredibly concerned I’d spoken to the DVSA. He kept on saying “you’ve dropped us right in it now” “we should have got it back in the workshop and let you see it”

I replied that at no point was this seemingly a favour to me and as far as they were concerned, I’d changed them.
He just kept on repeating that I’d dropped him in it and if he had to call them to have it removed, it was going to get sunstantislly worse. In the end I told him not to bother anymore and I would go somewhere else in future.

yes, still in Hoo. This was a place called Autotrend in Chatham.

Definitely annoying. The worst I had was a VAG main dealer that told me the discs and pads needed replacing. I got that done. The next year with less than 4k extra miles... the discs and pads apparently needed replacing. Big argument and I didn't go back there again. In hindsight I should have reported them. This was a long time ago though and I was quite naive back then.

What should happen is the garage should explain they didn't do the re-test properly and that it is invalid and have that one removed.

Am I the only one who sees this as a complete overreaction? You said yourself they have been excellent, now you need to find a new garage to use for something fairly trivial IMO.

Same. Whilst the OP might have disagreed with the MOT tester initially, the tester was then doing the OP a favour just passing it on the word of the OP.

The OP could have been wrong. The bulb has likely faded since new, the question is if it has faded enough for a fail and that's for the MOT tester to decide.

Thanks for the story - made me laugh. Getting mugged off by mechanics and replacing bulbs when the design doesn't really allow for it - two of my favourite things in life :D

It might seem an over-reaction, but the point was a complete abuse of trust. People are already sceptical of mechanics because they're not very familiar with the workings of a car, and more so the costs that are sometimes attached to big repairs. Therefore you need a mechanic who you can place your absolute trust in that doesn't look for repairs that aren't necessary.

I don't buy the OP's mechanic's claim one bit. If the indicators were really that bad, then he'd be able to tell the difference outside of the workshop as well. The fact that he couldn't even tell the indicators hadn't been replaced says it all really.
