NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Just watched this and it is spot on:

I have to say, the RT and Tensor core improvements have been a very disappointing. I was predicting double the performance. My thoughts were as RT and Tensor cores took up such small space on the die that they would double those, plus we would get improvement in efficiency. Instead we only got the latter and it is lacklustre.

All that said I do think the gap will get bigger between the 20 and 30 series in regards to RT and DLSS as new games get the most out of the 30 series improvements. But will never reach the 2x difference I was expecting. If hopper really is an MCM design I can see a huge increase at that point, but that is now 18-24 months away.

CUDA rendering performance in a lot of applications, including Blender is literally 2X over previous generation, the biggest performance increase was to workstation and server workloads, not gaming.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with RT and DLSS ;)

Basically Ampere is like Vega. Designed for professional workstations primarily and then try and get the best out of it for gaming. If nvidia were to make a full gaming architecture, it would be much better.

I agree, raytracing performance increase in games is beyond a joke.

26-36 FPS according to Steve in Control at 4K. So much for 2X performance in raytracing, nvidia.

So you're the one who nicked it!

Was just about to click pay on it then got the checkout error.

Congrats

They also had the 3090 Ventus up for Monday delivery too, but I missed that as well. Would have probably been cancelled anyway.

Thanks. There was definitely more than one available.
Hope you get one soon!

What is the release date & time of the 3090 and are reviews a day before again?

I wont be getting one but interested to see how they do compared to the 3080

Hey I tested freesync/gsync with the 3080 today and it works with my qled 2018 TV (q8dn)

So I'm happy to finally have that working on my TV.

Oh that's excellent news. Many thanks for testing for us. Well that's my mind at rest now I know hopefully what I'm getting for Christmas now. :)

24th is release date. Assuming reviews will be Monday or Wednesday before for FE but may not be the case, haven't seen it mentioned.

There was a review leaked...and it's not a great picture...anticipated a 20% increase but it's showing 10%...

question is how many people or scalpers are going to try buy a 3090 now they cannot get 3080s. im after a 3090 from the outset.

I was naively expecting to have to wait for Zen3 to do a full upgrade...probably now be waiting months for an ampere card :D

Can see stock suddenly not being an issue when Big Navi comes...

With the price hikes, I was tempted by a 3090 again but imagine the prices of those will increase also and if the expected 20% increase is nearer 10%, no chance...

I expect that the scalpers will do the same again and if it’s a good card for crypto currency mining then there may be similar problems.
I mean, OpenCL is trash so why would anyone care about buying Navi, especially after their display of incapable driver development team.

Thanks.

I’m more interested to see how Nvidia and other websites selling aftermarket cards handle bots and scalpers this time around.

CAPTCHA, cloud web server hosting and ddos prevension all in place I guess...

Either that or instant ‘notify me’ to ‘out of stock’, websites and forums crashing all day, sql errors, guru meditation errors and hundreds of listings on ebay for 3090s at £1500+

It's viable at 1440p tho.
