NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Same, came from a poor family, I could only afford what i could pay for myself from working in kitchens and being paid under the table.

As you get older though, things change. As you have more disposible income, the price to performance becomes less important.

My main point however was that Covid could very much level the playing field, recessions create inflation that rapidly devalues savings, most of the people in a position to buy a 3090 right now, still need to think about what might happen in the next 6 to 24 months.

I get that 6-24 month thing but if you are currently in a good enough financial position to buy one without giving it too much of a thought, it's not like someone won't buy it off you for not too dissimilar to what you paid for it in the event that harder times fall on you as an individual.

He didnt specify but he said they only have a few models in stock and they only have single digits. So I was guessing 6. He might have 9. ;)

And hes not saying which models have stock. Everything will be pre order but a few very lucky people will actually get their cards next day.

OK, I see. Thanks. :)

Why, can one not cancel a pre-order and get a refund? Not locked into anything.

mental commitment for a card with faux-scarcity is a strong pull factor. whether AMD like it or not, whether the 6900XT is good or not, people commit when they are in a queue for a card that 'wont lose any money'.

I understand @PrincessFrosty 's point. It is times of uncertainty, specially as we're headed into a second wave. But to your point, I also agree, those of us very fortunate don't have that to worry about.

The older I get and the more disposable income I get, the more of a kick I get out of getting a good deal and value for money. I'd have huge buyer's remorse buying something like the 3090 or the 2080ti when that came out. There's always something better to spend your money on than the e-peen range of GPUs. Even if you're just talking about your gaming setup.

Yeah - about where I am now - though I'd spend 3090/2080ti money if I had the need for it - sadly these days I'm gaming less and less and when I do it is more often slightly older titles.

Yeah, maybe. Some will be like this for sure, but open minded people will see AMD's results and if it is any good and priced well they may well cancel.

I do agree though it was important for them to come out first. Had AMD come out first with a card much better than the 2080Ti, many would have upgraded.

Same here. That's why it would be very unlikely I would ever go for a card like the 3090 unless there were special circumstances. I get more of a kick from getting value for money than I get out of e-peen, a lot more actually :D

But that's what I mean, recession hits everyone, one business goes under, loads less workers out there using services meaning less revenue for other businesses and it chain reactions violently, the value of the currency starts to drop. The UK has just entered a 6 month new lockdown and there's no end of this in sight. I forsee things like queues for graphics cards this time next year as a much smaller problem, as fewer people will have the cash to chase the upgrade train. I really wanted to go 3090 but the sensible side of me just wants to set that aside for future now. If things don't get too bad and we see a whole lineup refresh in say 6-12 months I might jump onto what would be a refresh of the 3090

The refreshes are inevitable. The wait for x weeks can be a bit of a falsehood as it turns out to be a combination of timing and a lack of progression. I can see your point that its a bad situation to be in if your not resting on some nice nest eggs/savings and we shouldnt be getting further into credit debt.

On the other hand if you have been furlough'ed or forced to stay at home there is probably no better way to kill time than to play your game library or learn something new.

Under usual circumstances I'd probably have jumped on the 3090 despite the terrible value proposition of it but all things considered, economy wise too, it feels like if I did I'd just be needlessly throwing away money when the performance of the 3080 is in reach for half the price.

Hey guys for anyone interested I just benched 10 mins of flight sym 4k ultra settings on my 3080. (16gb 2800mhz, 9700k 4.7mhz)
To sum up it was around 40fps then when close to the ground in london it was around 30 with lows of around 25.

First time playing the game so excuse my lacks of skills and it was easy mode.

Frame counter up top right, I choose stansted airport and flew low to the ground.

(Hd version of video will be avaible once youtube finishes processing).
@AutoPilot benched it for ya.

You do realise that FS is cpu limited at the moment that is why frames are all over the place no matter what GPU you have.

I just have mine locked to 30fps
