RTX 3080 gigabyte gaming OC stuttering and coil whine?

I would test the card in a different PC and see if the stuttering persists.
That would pretty much prove if it is the card or not.

Apart from that I'm not a huge fan of Corsair DDR4, so I would be mem testing that trash for sure.
Same goes for the SSD, I'd be test benching the read and write, checking the SMART health status.

this as me really worried re the eagles strange power connector even der8auer in a recent vid pointed this out .... @9:41

These are great guys but they really need to do these kind of tests in a case, I know its more hassle, but temperature related tests are neutered in this setup, that card would likely easily run 10C hotter in a case which would potentially show bigger differences between silent and performance modes, and with fan vs water cooled.

I performed tests on my SSDs and they all were all healthy and operating as normal.

I did however perform a memtest for 1.5 hours (2 passes) and encountered 3 errors... I will be investigating my RAM as the potential culprit to all this. Will look into my timings and voltages for the ram to see if the XMP profile might actually be causing instability and my problems.

Strangely, these stuttering issues did arise when I installed the RTX 3080. Is there any reason why a potential faulty in my memory would start to affect my games with the new card installed when previously I encountered no issues with my 1070?

Would also like to hear from forum members what other steps I should take given that I had 3 errors in the memtest.

Thanks everyone for the massive help this far!

Hey everyone,

Looking for advice on my rtx 3080 gigabyte gaming OC.

I know I am certainly lucky to be one of the first to have received an RTX 3080 which makes this slightly harder as if I were to RMA the card, I am not optimistic that a replacement card will be provided quick!

To quickly outline the problem:

When launching a game and playing for the first couple of minutes, I experience some stuttering and albeit it's not game breaking at all but definitely annoying.

The stuttering is also triggered by small tasks and usually when they occur for the first time. For example, in the Witcher 3 the game stutters for the first minute of playing and it seems to occur whilst the map loads new textures/areas of the map, and in any session, using my first sign when playing the game (e.g. igni) will always cause a stutter but will never stutter thereafter after the first sign is used.

The stutter is also brought about by other small things, like whenever I open the map in Control, my game stutters crazy whilst the map loads in and out (fps dropping from 100 to 20 for a second when the map is loaded in and out), which is infuriating considering that Control is a game where I have to open the map pretty often!

Thus far, it seems this stuttering occurs in all games I have tested so far, but get triggered by different things. Strangely, when testing Heaven benchmark, the stutters occur in the exact same scene and times which highlights that something is triggering these stutters.

On top of the stuttering, my card has some very significant coil whine which on its own wouldn't bother me that much, but whenever a stutter occurs, the coil whine noise stops simultaneously and starts as soon as the stutter finishes. This makes the coil whine very annoying and makes it even more excruciating when my game stutters. I am somewhat worried that stuttering may be more problematic in certain games so I am feeling uneasy about the issue.

I guess what I am asking members, is would you get the card RMA'd? Do other RTX 3080 owners experience the same issues (in particular, gigabyte gaming OC owners if there are some around)? Are these likely to be driver issues provided that the card is so new?

Would appreciate any help with this and insights as to what I should do.

My specs:

CPU : Ryzen 3700x
RAM : DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 16GB 3000 Mhz
PSU : EVGA 850w GQ

I also play on a Samsung 860 EVO SSD
Hey man. I have an RTX 3080 Gaming OC aswell. Haven't noticed any stuttering in all honesty and I'm running off a 650w PSU (yes, I know it's below recommended), but I have noticed the coil whine. Only at insane FPS but it's there. I drown it out with my headset tbh but just thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one that hears it, :)

I just RMA'ed my 3080 Gigabyte Eagel OC today. The PCI connector pins looked like they were soldered on in a rush.

3 of the 8 pins in the connector closest to the back of the card are seated much lower than they should be and I suspect that might be a problem when it gets hot.

I ran a couple of games for like 15 minutes before the screen went black and the fans stopped on the card (logo was still illuminated) and I had a black screen.

Plugged my Radeon 7 in and played for hours. PSU is a 750W.

So sad... :(
Thats why i call em Gigashite :D
Also ordered one myself :P

No coil whine or stuttering here, I have mine hooked up to an "EVGA SuperNova P2 850W '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply" that I got in 2016 using 2 separate cables.

I'm really happy with the card

Depends on the airflow in your case.

In my own case, difference in GPU temp between side panel on and of is 1-2c, not much.

RAM may be running hotter with the more power hungry GPU, especially if the GPU is blowing air directly on it.

almost every 3080 and 3090 will be heating up the ram and cpu, it's worth checking ram temps if the ram was already overclocked to the tilt. If it's stock or mild OC it won't matter

Update : After seeing Memtest errors, I investigated my RAM to see if they were the culprit for the stuttering and ran the Memtests for each individual stick. Strangely, although I initially got errors, I took out the ram sticks and put them back in and I got no errors in the following Memtest, honestly feels like I am going down a massive rabbit hole.

In either case, I tested the stuttering for each RAM stick individually and found that the stuttering was present for each stick, so I have ruled out the possibility of faulty RAM sticks causing the stuttering and that it's something else.

Not sure what to test anymore, I have checked SSD health, tested my RAM, tried DDU installation for GPU drivers and different cables for the GPU. Temperatures are normal, everything looks normal.

Although I cannot scientifically rule out the PSU as the faulty for the stuttering, I am fairly certain it's not the cause of the stuttering as the stuttering is only for the first minute or two of starting a game / joining a map and afterwards the performance is flawless (I think this is also indicative that the temperatures are not the cause), so it definitely feels like a driver issue for my particular setup / faulty card.

The good news is that I believe my issue is unique and not representative of the cards performance as lots of people commented using the same card and having good performance and no issues. People who have pre-ordered this card should feel excited to get their hands on it!

Please tell me the coil whine is nothing like what is in this video as that would definitely be a deal breaker for me and I would genuinely consider cancelling my order. That is frankly absurd especially considering the price of this Gigabyte card.

My coil whine is not as bad as that, that noise in the video fluctuates quite a lot whereas mine is pretty steady and not as noisy.
