Can I ask how this works? How do you change the power profile on the card or is it some sort of dual bios thing?

Just the same as getting into your regular BIOS: Reset, slap F2 or enter as it boots. Once into the mobo BIOS go to GPU settings. That's your GPU BIOS. In there, you should find a power limit setting with a dropdown. Simples. On the Stix this is going to go up to a hilarious 480w. I won't be needing my central heating this winter.

Not the end of the world, I'll use online GPUs if it comes to that. As Rogueywon got his today and only ordered 2 minutes later I'm hoping for the next batch :D

...and mines was 2 minutes after yours :p I would have been in at 14:02 if the website didn't crash after confirming my payment

Asus GeForce RTX 3090 ROG Strix Gaming OC

Order Number: 5880787

I am really considering to cancel though, if stock will only be around on the 5th and I'm not even sure if I was fast enough to get one of those...

Most of GN’s criticism is based on how it is marketed as an 8K card. And I think Steve was genuinely shocked that Linus had shilled so hard in that respect. Which is fine, if you want to game in 8K you need your head examined.

There are also conflicting reviews out there in terms of performance, with some, like GN’s reporting 5-10% improvements and one or two others reporting 20-30% at the only resolutions that matter (4K and ultrawide). So there is an element of the chip lottery going on there too I think.

JayzTwoCents got his review about right I think, pointing out the card runs cooler, with better silicon and a higher overclock and power ceiling that is yet to be properly exploited.

With its insane 480w power limit easily flipped on in the BIOS, the techpowerup review has the Strix averaging 23% better than the 3080 FE without overclocking either card. Overclocking adds another 3-4% on top. So 27% faster, according to them. GN also reported no improvement almost in frame rates for RDR2 over the 3080, where tchpowerup has the Strix pushing 25% more frames at 4K. In Metro Exodus, techpowerup has the Strix 3090 30% faster than the 3080FE at 4K with RT on. 30%!!!

One of the YouTube reviews shows a 0% difference between 3080 to 3090 in Gears 5 Ultra/4K, where techpowerup shows a clear 20% improvement. Techpowerup also shows, before overclocking, a 61% improvement on RDR2 in 4K/Ultra over the 2080ti. Bearing in mind SLI usually nets you average 80% usage across both CPUs, this is about the same performance as two 2080tis in SLI.

I think the takeaway is that owners of this card are going to get a lot more out of them than the 5-10% trolls who will never own one are going to keep repeating like sheep for the next couple of years. They won’t want to hear that we’re actually getting 20-30% more performance. This argument will literally occur every time the 3090 is mentioned anywhere. So screw it, I’ll just be happy with the extra performance I’m getting and not engage. Lol.

If it's 20-30% faster then I won't be happy that I cancelled thinking it's only 5-10% faster

Thanks for the information. Nvidia's marketing department grabbed hold of the 3090 and pushed as an 8K gaming beast, to create publicity because of the AMD 6000 series news and rumours - it's all about being first, perhaps AMD has a card that can push 8K (just about). This then leads people to that didn't get a 3080 to buy the 3090 because it will crush 4K, if it can manage 8K, the logic is there. It is encouraging to see the above gains and there has been a great deal of 3090 bashing to get video views on YouTube and those who are simply bitter and want to feel good about their 3080 or AMD or 2080ti or whichever GPU they currently have. It's important to note that the drivers alone need maturing and we are likely to see improved gains, combined with game engines taking advantage of Ampere technologies.

The other argument as to why someone would want this, is the it's a prosumer card for those like me that work from home in media. I have a 3080 on preorder with OCUK, but having seen it crash due to lack of VRAM and the 3090 trounce the existing Titan which is $1000 more. This became the point where I realised the 3090 was a better option; improved, faster workflow and then quality gaming.

For the record, I bought the 3090 from Scan, as I think OCUK have handled the preorders pretty poorly for the 3080.

If it's 20-30% faster then I won't be happy that I cancelled thinking it's only 5-10% faster

And that is why you should wait for reviews!

Tbf its only 30% because the strix oc board allows for 480W power. These gpus need power for their max perfromance.

All two power pin 3090s will be limited to 375W and will only be 5-10% faster than a 3080.

So you have to buy the right 3090.
