NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

FFS - what is this insanity? Since when did we have to give a flying xxxx about capacitors for STOCK retail cards? This is all part of a massive con, we’re not discussing overclocking, we’re talking about what’s most likely to be OK.
Put the CCs away, take a breath.

You do realise all Nvidia cards overclock natively? Just because the box says 1710mhz they all try and clock as high as possible, and that boost depends on power and thermals for the outcome.
What's going wrong it seems is as the power ramps with the cheap POSCAPs it causes instability.

The only fix will be a bios/firmware update to affected (Cheaply made cards) that will lower the max possible power, this meaning your 'standard card' will perform slower than stock because it cant boost.

So now do you see why it's not insanity? your stock card is going to perform less than stock!!!

My Gigabyte eagle oc boosts to 2025mhz to 2040mhz in call of duty and holds it. I play a good few hours a day on and seems crash free so far..

But I'm kind of peeved that it has the cheap caps when I could have bought the TUF at the same time as they was both in stock..

So glad I didnt buy a 3080 now after watching jayz2cents video about the ctds etc. What an absolute disaster this 3080 launch has been!

On the back of the ROG Strix on their website it shows the cheap capacitors. wtf!

i think you've mixed that up if the aib cards have 6 black capacitors on the back they are the ones that are falling over at 2ghz+ from the picture in the link you posted the strixx has 6 banks of the more expensive capacitors which are need to stop cross talk and interference, thus allowing more sustained higher clocks

what you want (the asus strix 3080)

vs what you want to avoid at all costs really, unless you plan to not overclock and even underclock (this is the zotac trinity rtx 3080 card)

Yep, if you also take a look at the tech powerup screen shots its clear they have used the better MLCC variants.

So the Strix is looking like one of the more reliable cards to boot. Performance, power tests all confirm this as well in the review.

To be fair though, right now the CTD blaming of the capacitors is just a theory at the moment. Admittedly a very convincing looking one however.

basically the more expensive cards should have the better mlcc's on them, its like life you pay a bit more then stuff lasts longer and works for a good while, no simpathy for the scalpers on the bay now they have shot themselfs in the foot buying up all the cards, in a few weeks when this problem is confirmed they will loose a good chunk of money and it'll serve them right

I honestly hope the theory is wrong, because if it is right the cheap fix is a bios update handicapping peoples very expensive cards and that's not cool at all. Hell, I would just get a refund and buy a better product. Regardless of how hard they are to buy at the moment.
