The other day on the ampere thread, I asked about connecting my PC to my TV for 4K gaming. TV is a Samsung Q85R, so not a cheapo telly by any means.

Anyway, I connected it and got SOTTR running at a decent FPS at 4K using my 2070S, but I was a bit shocked. I have to be honest, I prefer the picture quality on my monitor, which is a 27 inch 1440p 144hz Gigabyte monitor.

It seems sharper, more colourful and so much smoother than the TV, even running a 4K res, which the monitor allows, but just downscales.

Has anyone else found this? Is there an explanation for it?

Do you have game mode on? Game mode looks shocking on my Q80r. Pick your poison it seems, nice quality with higher input lag, or terrible washed out visuals.

My LG OLED C7 destroys my 1440p IPS Acer Predator when it comes to colour and visual clarity. That being said, my TV has been professionally calibrated and I have equipment to calibrate my monitor, so they're working from the same baseline.

My games look and feel amazing on my Samsung 55" Q70R. I game mostly in 1440p @ 120hz using freesync so thats using gamemode. Its way better than my LG 34" 144hz monitor.

When looking for monitors with good picture quality it's important to look at the brightness (cd/m²), contrast ratio and sRGB (%) ratings.

Forgive my ignorance, but if you're not a big television addict - like myself, then would it be a waste to pick up one of the larger tv screens? I ask simply because I keep reading that the colours and contrasts are way better, hence my curiosity.

My 1440p 27" TN is getting on a bit now and I will very likely be getting a new screen next year.

It depends on a lot of factors. Usually from my experience some people prefer really juiced up picture quality that tends to oversaturation and huge contrasts, and then when you show them what the picture is actually supposed to look like (i.e. the reference itself) then they don't like it. Could be the same case here, try your TV's Vivid mode and see if you like it better, if so then you have your answer. And keep game mode disabled for this test, unfortunately you picked up a TV (applies to all Samsung TVs bar the Q90T) which severely gimps itself when it comes to PC/console usage.

The thing about TVs is that they have an absolute advantage in terms of picture quality over monitors, but they also have the subjective advantage of greater immersion thanks to a bigger screen. Then you top that off with many more features & generally cheaper for comparable performance (or better) and you have a winning package - hence so many PC gamers are buying TVs to use as displays. The monitor market, franky, is just ****.

Thanks, I'll start checking out that side of the market when I begin pricing up my next screen. Never really considered them before.

For us in Europe you don't have much choice though. For game mode Sony stands tall above all others. If you don't want an LCD then it's down to LG OLEDs. If you want HDMI 2.1 then the choice is limited to either Sony XH90 (alright middle of the pack, has hdmi 2.1, best value), Samsung Q90T (but note it only has 1 hdmi 2.1 port and it isn't earc enabled; also has some issues which prevent me from straight recommending it like ghosting at 60hz), or LG B/C/E/G 9/X (still slightly worse in game mode but not noticeable without side-by-side; problem is VRR raises black levels & it's currently broke for proper full hdmi 2.1; not a biggie - has the best PQ out of all and 4K 120hz is still fine).

If you don't care about hdmi 2.1 as much then Sony XF90, XG90/95 are great value right now, with better picture quality than the XH90 but you'll be "stuck" with 4K 60hz or 1440p/1080p 120hz, and no VRR.

Otherwise, I'd say next year should be better in selection with Sony adopting HDMI 2.1 more widely across its sets.

So what is the best non-OLED TV for gaming with Free-sync?

As I haven't been able to find any over TV than the LG models.

Is there any in the pipe-line even?

Now try it on a LG OLED from this year or last year and you will be shocked again, but shocked at how much better it is.

If no OLED then try a similar sized 4K monitor, again you will notice how much better 4K is to 1440P. I have all 3 by the way :)

Not helpful for the OP really (sorry) but Also chipping in to say LG OLED (C8 55" in this case) looks absolutely stunning compared to my IPS Acer X34 superwide (which I still love though, and especially for the Gsync and the ultra wide aspect ratio is brilliant when you're sat directly in front).
With OLED It's all about those blacks baby! < not racist. Actually the HDR is another major factor and the motion clarity is way better too than IPS monitors.

I use the OLED TV which is in the lounge via Nvidia Gamestream too so that's technically compressed video I'm seeing but I am about 8 feet away. My mind boggles at what a smaller OLED screen with a higher PPI like the CX directly connected via HDMI 2.1 at 120Hz must look like. I'm waiting for an even smaller version to come out then I might start thinking about a new desktop screen.
