I was going to upgrade my water-cooled 1080TI FE to a 3080 but with all the debacle of launch day and now the even closer release of BigNavi I've decide to wait until the dust settles.

With all the talk of 3080 crashing due to overclocking I though maybe it's time to have a go at clocking my 1080TI. I normally just OC my processor as I'm not a massive games player.

Anyhow, had a go with MSI afterburner and got to the following. Any 1080TI experts out there can tell me how it's looking. Anything stupid done ??



 
Why are you trying to overclock a 1080ti? Think they boost to their max potential on their own accord!!

You can still get a bit more out of them. But it's not that much. Especially when your water cooled, they boost higher when cooler.

I can't remember what I've set mine to. I'll have to have a look

I expect you may see a bin or two higher if you get your temps down slightly, but on the whole think your good.

For memory will need multiple runs. Find while errors may not be obvious, your actual performance goes down. I had to look at memory on a per card basis as it was not obvious.

Looks good, I have to ramp fan speeds right up on my Palit to sustain 2050MHz. I've settled on 2GHz at 1.031v for my higher OC profile, although since reformatting at the start of the year it doesn't always hold that clock under heavy load with the same custom fan curve. I tend to use a second profile that's steady at around 1922MHz at 1v with a less aggressive fan curve as the difference isn't discernable outside of benchmarks.
 
Not had no gaming time tonight :(

I think mine boosts to 2100mhz but then when my loop warms up it drops down to 2050 and will run all day at that. If I upped my fan speed it would probably stay there but it's not worth the noise.
 
I reset my boosts to factory a while back, as Just Cause was crashing with any kind of overclock at all. These are my current results, so yours don't look to shabby at all! My CPU and GPU are also watercooled, but with just the one 360mm rad at the moment.

I really like Valley, beautiful benchmark.

My Watercooled 1080ti Strix stock & oc results, yours looks all good but you could try playing with the voltage slider as it may allow you to push the core higher. 2063Mhz is my max and will hard lock/black screen at 2076Mhz ....

As the real world gaming gains for overclocking a 1080Ti are really quite small I went on a journey to undervolt whilst still getting a high, and most importantly, constant boost clock in gaming and having a really quiet system.

You do this via a custom curve method in afterburner. After lots of experimenting a few years ago I settled on the core at 1975Mhz which drops slightly to 1950Mhz when temps hit certain level. This is at only 1.1v! (default is 1.5v I believe). This nets me about a 5 degree drop in temps for pretty much the same performance and helps with the longevity of the card (with the 3080 debacle looks like I might be hanging onto my 1080Ti for longer than I thought)

A good way to set up your memory to its best performance, is to run the benchmark with a live FPS counter, then Alt-tab to Afterburner and increase memory overclock a bit, Alt-tab back and check FPS... Repeat until performance stops increasing and actually drops, then take it back down a little bit in afterburner again just to ensure reliability and stability.

You usually see performance drop before you actually see artifacts in the benchmark.

Obviously if you can get Afterburner to overlay over the top of the benchmark, or run the benchmark in a window, you don't have to keep Alt-tabbing
 
Man I would live that cpu and RAM. Bit extreme though just to get good cpu performance.

My next big upgrade will in all probability be to a 32 core TR setup, but that's a while down the line unless my stock go crazy :D

I sold my 3970X a few months ago...
 
You also get the bonus of not turning on your central heating with that set-up. Dread to think how much heat it's going to produce..

How do you find the Xeon performs compared to the 3970X

Better in every single way, it's actually stable for starters and doesn't randomly freak out when you run AVX256 workloads like blender or video transcoding with ffmpeg. My 3970X would crash at stock lmao.
