Hi,
I've just changed broadband supplier to John Lewis (PlusNet), FTTC. The supplied router is a Zyxel VMG3925-B10C, and my intention is to use this purely as a modem, with the Asus acting as the router. Other network infrastructure comprises an unmanaged switch providing wired connections to most rooms in the house, as well as to two wired Ubiquiti APs (it's a fairly large house with lots of very solid internal walls.)
The broadband itself, just using the Zyxel as a router, seems fine. However I can't get the Asus to "play nicely".
I can put the Zyxel into bridge mode. However when I connect the Asus it doesn't pick up the internet connection. I'm sure the username and password are correct. The Asus management software shows the internet connection as being disconnected. It's hard to tell from this whether the problem is the Zyxel not working in bridge mode; the Asus not being able to pick up a correctly working bridged connection; or a balls-up from me in terms of the physical setup. I guess the latter is most likely but I can't think what I could have done wrong!
So, I moved on to Plan B, which is to keep using the Zyxel as the main router, and just use the Asus as an AP. I think I've now got that set up OK, with the Asus set to AP mode. I can connect a wireless client to either the Asus or to one of the APs (the Asus having a separate SSID for now) and everything works fine. However if I disable wifi on a client and instead connect directly to a LAN port on the Asus - nothing. This seems particularly odd - unless perhaps AP mode disables wired connections?
I appreciate a lot of the above is probably a bit vague but if anyone has any firm ideas about what could be wrong, any further information I can supply or what else I can try, I'd be very grateful. I'm fairly technically minded in other fields but claim no enormous knowledge about networking, so not too much unexplained jargon if at all possible!
Thanks in advance...
