Quick one - if I have a phone capable of fast charging @ 25 watts and have a charger that works @ 40 watts will the charger automatically lower its output to 25watts when charging the phone?

Assuming both are using the same standards, yes. What phone and charger is it? If for example you're using a USB-PD charger with a phone that only supports QuickCharge, it won't fast charge and will only go up to 5v 2a.

It would potentially be a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and a 40 watt Huawei mate 20 pro charger

In that case it will charge but not at 25W. As far as I'm aware Huawei's Supercharge tech is not compatible with the S20 FE which uses USB-PD PPS, and will likely only go 10W max.

Ah ok thanks for that. No big deal just had no idea if I was potentially damaging the phone using it
