Gen 4 NVME SSD's are still pretty uncommon in gaming PC's.

"Pretty uncommon" is a bit of an overstatement. :p The number of people out there with PCI Express 4 motherboards will be a tiny grain of sand on a big beach in terms of total PCs.

The old consoles wouldn't have been able to take advantage of even a regular SSD either, they improve loading times by a few seconds at best.

Even a regular SSD makes a significant improvement on a PS4.

Digital Foundry did some tests years back and Bloodbourne loaded in 17 seconds on an SSD, 23 sec on a hybrid and 30 secs on the default drive.

Fallout 4 was 29 on an SSD, 39 on a hybrid and 55 on the stock drive.

The full video and scores are available below.

Seriously though, this is a forum of enthusiasts. Most people don't even care. 29 seconds 23 seconds who gives a ****?

Most people wouldn't care, but as you say we are enthusiasts so do care about performance, speed, loading times etc.

Terley said this gen couldn't take advantage of an SSD but that's just factually incorrect, and as per the Digital Foundry video an SSD can provide significant improvements.

Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T)IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax Bluetooth® 5.1

1000Mbps and WiFi 6.
There is a big difference between hardware capabilities and actual download speed. Of my 3 devices (PC, Xbox and PS) the PS is slower (by a huge margin) in terms of download speeds. All hardwired with Gigabit. Its dreadful.

Tbf for Bloodborne, those extra 13 seconds could be the difference between calming down vs smashing your controller when you die.

Haha, yep!

I'm playing the mario 3D all stars collection at the moment though and that makes Bloodborne feel like a meditation at times. We sometimes forget how far game controls have come.

THIS.

The PSN is absolutely shocking for download speeds. There are ways and means around it such as using a laptop as a Proxy Server but that is just hassle.
