2022 BRZ/GR86, Turbo?

I doubt it will be turbo.

Also theres a 4 cylinder Supra now?

Damn... I've been firmly in the "its not a BMW" camp until now, but now I'm changing to "yeah, its just a Z4"

Super lame. :(

But those wont meet modern regulations either. The modern Honda engines arent as lively as the old vtec ones.

Toyota had to ditch the 2zz for the same reason.
I meant engine swap, I hope the GT86 drops in price once the new GR86 is released.

I test drove a GT86 and its so dull and slow... :(

In the same way that an MX5 is dull and slow if you don't use it properly. ;)

Hopefully they manage to give the next gen a bit more power while keeping the fantastic ride and steering. It would be a shame if they sold out and lost the spirit of the original.

I think with more power these will sell.

I know it would get my wallet twitching, wanted one after the S2000 but it just felt like a less special version with a solid roof.

Two differen't cars, not a good comparison.

AE86 is a completely different story, in a chassis like the GT86 you need more power for it to be fun.

An updated version with say a 1.5 turbo making say 220bhp would be perfect, i'm sure that'd sell fairly well as the MPG figures would look good on paper. Im sure you could massage them to get 50mpg in the test.

Yep you need to keep them above about 5000 rpm. Up there they are quite quick, it's effort to keep it there on the road though. But the S2000 is kinda the same.

Going from the gt86 to the Elise (Toyota engine lol) was a big shock with the responsiveness. That throws torque at you as soon as you touch the throttle.

What engine was in it? A 2zz ?

2ZZ is life <3

I aspire to own an Elise 111R...

I've experienced that engine in everything else it was put in... Now I need to experience it in a super lightweight sports car. I bet it is incredible.

They have no torque at all though, you have to rev the nads off of them. The lightness of the Elise will be what made it seem so capable lower down the RPM range.

A 1zz throws torque at you? or is this another engine?

They have even less torque, and don't have the top end power to make up for it either.

But again, enough to make an Elise feel pretty rapid I'm sure. Less so than the 2ZZ though.

Ah yes. I meant the 2zz sorry.

Either way they really don't have much torque. Below 4000RPM they're completely gutless (but fine for a 1.8), and they only wake up properly once you get into lift at 6000RPM. But once you're at 6000RPM, hoooooo boy are they great fun! :D

But an Elise weighs what 850KG? Vs the 1200KG cars I've had the engine in. And the Lotus application has a titch more power and torque as well. Plus it is way more aerodynamic, and being so close to the road will further increase the sensation of speed.

The 1zz and 2zz have pretty much the same torque curve until you hit the higher cam on the 2zz afaik. Lotus don't use a Toyota ECU though and I think they altered some other things about them too. There is no pre-cat and I suspect the flywheel is a lot lighter.

I had a celica years ago which had the same engines and it didn't feel the same at all.

I don't use it much these days. I did all through lockdown as I sold the gt86 just before and I couldn't buy a new runaround for months. It attracts to much attention tbh :/

2zz has 133lb torque without a supercharger...

I know I've had 2 cars with them! Its like the least torquey 1.8 lire engine of modern times

I know someone who was running an mk3 mr2 2zz supercharged and said it wasn't torqued enough so he sold it and got a 1zz turbo instead :D

Yep, it's not a lot, neither is the HP by modern standards. But in about 860kg it pulls well :)

Anyway. Toyota currently sell Lotus a 1.8 which can obviously do 250hp (probably more) with a SC. So they could use that.

The iconic part of the car is how low the centre of mavity is. Anyone saying it shouldn't have an FA20/Flat 4 I feel hasn't experienced the car enough. Stick all that weight higher up and I can put a hand on it being worse to drive.

I highly doubt the GR86 will be turbo, or at a very minimum will still have an NA spec. The main reason being the brakes look to be the same size and setup as the GT86. I'm yet to see anyone with a Turbo 86 that has not uprated the brakes or doesn't plan to.

The best toyota engine right now is the 2GR-FE they do that in the lotus and numerous other toyotas.

Thats why everyone wants to transplant them into their MR2's.

The best 4 banger is the k20.
