The fan sulks air in through the vents on either side of the console then blow it out the rear of the console. It was explained in the video. Also there are a couple of small pockets that trap dust so you can easily vacuum out the dust. Again in the teardown.
At some point the air must get passed over or through the fans of that heatsink, otherwise it's pointless......if air gets passed through it, then there will be dust and fluff accumulation - it's inevitable unless there are filters (as anyone that tried to prevent dust in a PC case will tell you).

I'll just say that as someone who cleans about once a week, my PC that is almost on the floor level didn't even need it's annual clean this year. I know dust is everywhere but with even a semi frequent cleaning schedule it shouldn't be an issue for a good long time.

There's a lot of excitement around how cool and quiet the PS5 is, do you think the hype is justified?

It is a very big heatsink, but I would have thought that the main reason why it runs cool is because the APU can ramp down its clock speed when idling etc.

No, because just like the Series X video, we didn't get to run any taxing games.

The cooling looks more than up to the task, I can't see how they could allay people's concerns any better really. The fan is pretty big and almost spans the width of the console which means it won't need to spin quickly, the heatsinks are well-designed and they've made airflow less obstructed and made the fan and vents more accessible for cleaning out dust.

That's what the two holes he points out earlier are for, they correspond with gaps in the heatsink design which should allow dust that gets caught in the fins to be removed. It might not remove every spec of dust but it at least makes them more accessible than most other designs.

I was looking at the Demons souls stuff and I remembered why I hated the original at time, it was that non explained world tendency stuff. Like certain things only spawned if your tendency was at a certain level which dropped certain items etc. I don't get how people figure this stuff out.

Anyone planning on taking the sides off day one?
Perhaps vinyl wrap?

Also after watching the teardown. Would it not run cooler if I took the sides off? (maybe more dust)
I know there's the front intakes. Just thinking from a cooling perspective.

Testing basically and restarting... Or follow a guide. I learned the hard way I'm dark souls 3. Now I just tend to check a guide before responding to an NPC or using an item I don't know what it is.

It's probably quite easy to add a liquid cooler onto this.

Nope, day 1 will be figuring out where I can actually place it given the size

Same! Thinking my current Ikea BYAS TV unit is not going to be wide enough in the middle AV rack and if so Mrs Shawrey has already approved getting a bigger unit which means.... bigger TV needed! :D

it does beg the question what performance penalties there'll be for games on a user-added M.2 drive.

There shouldn't be any. It's why you need an SSD even faster than the internal one so that things like passing commands from the PS5 SSD controller to the card controller and "translating" from 6 levels of priority to 2 don't cause problems.

Ha! The TV has to be a specific ratio to the size of the console for optimal gaming experience...

...it's all science! :D

But if that was the case they'd have just used sufficiently fast enough NVMe drives in the first place instead of a complicated bespoke solution.

Mrs Shawrey understands this. Everything has got to look 'right'. Cant have the cabinet dwarfing the TV and the PS5 can't look as big as the TV so its looking like 75 inches are going to be needed... oooohhh err matron! :D

There are none. :D (Or certainly weren't at the time when the hardware had to be finalized. Not to mention they cost an arm and a leg.)

I'm more concerned about the lifespan of having an SSD built into the motherboard, surely you'll be better off buying an extra SSD just in the interest of being able to easily replace it if wear becomes an issue?

Do we have any idea when the enhanced edition of Cyberpunk is coming out? I'm going to try my best to hold out for it rather than playing the PS4 version on the PS5.
