Building My Nephew a Budget Gaming Rig

Hi, I'm after some advice. I'm building my young Nephew his first gaming PC for Christmas as a surprise. I'm doing it on a budget as my Sister has no idea about PC's. She asked me if i could do a mid range build for around £200 bless her. I told her I'd go halves with her but will obviously be paying the lions share which is fine. I'm trying to put together something reasonable that will last him a while as he grows into it.

I've bought him a cheap 1080p 75hz freesync monitor as he currently has a 1600 x 900. I got a reasonable MATX case that comes with 4 x 120mm fans pre installed so some savings there, budget Corsair 450w PSU is sorted as well as some decent 3200 ram. Now I'm a bit unsure where to go next.

I managed to snag a Powercolour 5500xt 8gb for £160 which I thought was a pretty decent price and would pair well with the monitor.

I ordered a B450 Mortar max board and was going to give him my currently unused R5 1600 with the idea that he could upgrade down the line to one of the newer Ryzen chips.

I currently have an R5 3600 in my own PC with a 5700xt that I'm using at 1440 but I'm wondering if it makes more sense to give him the 3600 to boost his performance at 1080 as, from reading, I think he'll be more CPU limited and it wont really impact me as much at a higher res. Is this correct?

The slight drop in performance of my pc really wont bother me too much as I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm not actually all that fussed about gaming anymore but I don't really know what sort of performance the R5 1600 and 5500XT will give him. For reference he is interested in Dead by Daylight, Minecraft, Fortnite and I'm guessing he'll get into other stuff once he has a half decent pc at his disposal.

It's a 1600af paired with a 5500XT (caught between a 1600 and 2600 for performance) - but will give you a good idea at 1080p:

Thanks for that, looks like it should be really good for him. Actually a lot better than I was expecting! I appreciate your help.

No worries.

Keep your 3600 - it's great CPU and your nephew can always get one second hand in the future - or even a zen 3 as the Mortar Max BIOS will be updated in January.

I guess this is what happens when I get caught up in all the new hardware release news. "Old" tech is suddenly inferior and not up to the job and I start overthinking everything. I guess that's what the marketing is for :p
I know my Nephew will be chuffed to bits with it as he's looked at prices and already told his mum he knows there's no hope of him ever getting a gaming PC as they can't afford it.

He's going to have a very pleasant surprise - that's a great performing PC that you've compiled for the budget. Hope the build goes smoothly.
