rtx 3080 20gb coming Dec

Ask yourself, how much faster is a 3090 over a 3080 @ 4k?
Answer: at best 15%
It has more cuda cores, 384 bit mem bus and 24gb vram. Do you really think 20gb ram on a 3080 is going to make it significantly faster than the 10gb version at 4k ? because I don't.

Really wanted the 20Gb variant from the very start.
But I am not going to chance cancelling my MSRP pre-order now and lose my lowish queue position.

Plus the cash I save by not going for the 20Gb can go towards that Zen 3 upgrade. :p

The only reason for 20 Gb vs 10 Gb, is if you're rendering / want to definitely future-proof the 3080 - but at what cost?

I posted this in another thread but it applies here too. Some discussions why 10GB is enough.

I found this via here:

The PlayStation 5 features 16GB of GDDR6 unified RAM with 448GB/sec memory bandwidth. This memory is synergized with the SSD on an architectural level and drastically boosts RAM efficiency. The memory is no longer "parking" data from an HDD; the SSD can deliver data right to the RAM almost instantaneously.
Essentially the SSD significantly reduces latency between data delivery and memory itself. The result sees RAM only holding assets and data for the next 1 second of gameplay. The PS4's 8GB of GDDR5 memory held assets for the next 30 seconds of gameplay.
"There's no need to have loads of data parked in the system memory waiting to potentially be used. The other way of saying that is the most of the RAM is working on the game's behalf."
The SSD allows Sony to keep RAM capacity down and reduce costs.
"The presence of the SSD reduces the need for a massive inter-generational increase in size."
Excerpt from https://www.tweaktown.com/news/7134...ep-dive-into-next-gen-storage-tech/index.html which was an analysis of the Mark Cerny video "Road to PS5"

So, we have only a 2.7x increase in VRAM because of how the I/O improvement changes the paradigm of how developers utilize memory for next-gen.

We recently learned that this same amazing I/O revolution, will also be enabled on the RTX 30 series.
For those of us who pair an NVME SSD with a 30 series GPU, VRAM isn’t going to be a limiting factor in performance thanks to technologies such as DirectStorage and RTX I/O and Sampler Feedback Streaming. See the end of this post for links to articles that go into more detail of what these technologies do.

---

So essentially I think you guys might be looking at it wrongly.

The next gen will be streaming in more assets at a faster rate and this is where technologies like RTX IO will emulate the consoles on PC.

Also the Xbox X has 10GB of super fast ram and 6GB of slower ram. So to me this kinda emulates how the 3080 is set up with the 10GB.

EEEK!!! I have pre-ordered an Asus OC Strix 10Gb.
Living in Ireland, I have to rely on OcUK for all my PC Upgrades.. I cant afford a 20 Gb, considering what the 10 Gb version is going for
 :(

No no. I mean at the moment 8GB is considered enough, so 10GB you have a bit of headroom there.

Just seems logical to me if a 6900xt is roughly on par with a 3080 with 16gb vram and comes in at say £600. Don't think even the most die hard Nvidia fanboy would pay £400 more over that for 4gb more vram.

I still wouldn't their drivers are S*** lol Until they get their arses in gear and get a decent driver dev team for the people who know won't be interested, 2 friends have 5700s 1 of 5700xt and they both crash, Do a quick search on Google with 5700 crashes issues, You can have the fastest product on the market but if your drivers are pants I wouldn't care less if it was cheaper or faster

And just to add this is NOW they're still crashing after god knows how many drivers over a year to get it right and they still can't, It was noted some years ago AMD had problems with thier driver dev team so it's these things that put people off AMD me included.

Thats true. Well im just hoping that the 20GB is around £100 more to justify my cancellation :)

i highly doubt that..if anything its gona be over 1k for lower tier 20gb card.. i mean its 20gb 4 short of a 3090 which is £1470 for the lower tier 3090s. the gigabyte aorus xtreme 3080 is £900. and the 3090 is £1700 you be looking at least at 1550 or around that price point for a Xtreme 20gb.

If the founders 3080 is £650 then the 20Gb version would be £900 max I think.

how can you even come up with that price...its 4 gigs short of the 3090...do you honestly think its going to cost less then 1k..your going to be disapointed.

Well, that will be about right then. Looks now ( thanks to Pandemic ) that I won't be buying until early next year ( boo! ) but at least will get more RAM ( yay! ).

Perhaps you hadn't noticed the number of crashing 3080s, which have been explained as driver issues or the number of hot fixes for the hot fixes :D

I think the price for the 20Gb will be nearer the old 2080ti price - I suspect £1100-£1200 for the cards

I would say it will easily be £999 and above. Quite a good price point from £750 to £1500. I’m not counting founders edition as that’s a unicorn

hoping for around 1k price, which I am thinking its gonna be around there and it slots in nicely between the 3080 and 3090 prices for nvidia
