AMD Zen 3 (5000 Series), rumored 17% IPC gain.

Me as well, my 3600x has been fine, and I've just got a 4k monitor and the cpu usage is fine at that res. I desperately need a 4k capable gpu now.
4k should mostly be fine, but i think Zen 2 will bottleneck a 3080 at 1440p and 1080p if wanting high fps. So i look forward to upgrading my 3700x, want to see reviews and other comparisons first though of the 5800x and 5900x. Hopefully the reviews are coming before we can actually order.
 
It's your money, of course, but why does it matter if the cores go to 5GHz if the CPU is proven by benchmarks (TBC) to be worse at all tasks?
Because your getting 10 cores for the price of 8 with the margin in games a couple of percent and multi core workload will be around the same, also you have an upgrade path to rocket lake which could very well be better for gaming again.

Well I've , for few moths now, a 3600x/rx5700xt combo with an MSI 27" 1440p/144hz/1ms response monitor and its chewed through everything I've thrown at it and the gpu usage at all times was 95% or above using afterburner. Obviously it might a occasionally but very rarely and not so that it caused a problem.
4K on the other hand, is different in the while gpu usage is still the same as at 1440p, I'm appear to be running out of Vram with after burner showing Vram usage at 7950gb ish while in game, so I'm hoping an RDNA2 card will solve that problem. If the 3600x can't handle it then its gonna get replaced, but I wanna check first.

I get around 300fps in doom and 250fps in apex @1440p with a 3600 + 3080 so I don't think it's that much of an issue especially when your above 144fps in most games anyway.

Maybe some bottleneck at 1080p but again if your over 144fps it's not going to matter much anyway short of playing competitive on a 240+ monitor.
 
Sure but a good boost to minimums is always a good thing
At those levels the minimums would rarely drop below 144hz anyway.

The only realistic upgrade for me would be a 5800X or 5900X and I probably would have went for a 5800X I don't really need 12 cores but £430 doesn't represent VFM especially with intels 10700K coming in £100 cheaper with virtually identical performance in gaming. will probably end up skipping zen 3 and jump on the next gen stuff unless prices improve.

Re: my earlier post. So i'm looking for an 8 core CPU, 5800X is too expensive, 10700K is only £375, Intel are now the budget brand....

But hold on, thinking again. AMD's IPC is now so high the 8 core 16 thread 10700K is still a worse CPU than the 6 core 12 thread 5600X, Single thread performance AMD are just taking the pee at this point Intel cannot get in sight, Multithreaded performance because the IPC is so much higher than Icelake is not going to be any faster if even as fast as the 6 core Zen 3, which will run at 80 watts tops, vs 200 Watts, and £280 vs £380 of the 10700K.

AMD are in a position to make Intel look bad no matter which way you look at it.

in reality the 10700K is a £220 CPU now, unless its that price there is no reason to buy it, AMD had beaten Intel in power efficiency and performance outside of gaming 12 months ago, that, Gaming, is now gone, AMD have turned Intel's CPU into the Core i7 Bulldozer.
 
Happy with what I've seen so far (obviously wait for reviews to confirm). Will probably pick something (depending on what games can utilise then) once they are EOL to replace my 3600.

Plus the extra £60-80 pounds a year to run the chip of course due to power draw :P
 
I really do fancy ditching my Intel 9900K for that 5950X but at the back of my mind is the knowledge these are the last AM4 CPU's with a shelf life of only 12mths and no further upgrade path after that, and the change over to AM5 & DDR5 is coming in just 12mths.

These are basically AMD's equivalent to Intel's 10xxx CPU's...

Just hang on to it, its still a good CPU and will be for another year.
 
Yea the new AMD stuff is end of the line for AM4, but the top 16 core will handle anything you need for 3-5 years and the 8 core will still be very good as well. All zen 3 chips contain a lot of power for single thread stuff, lightly threaded games and heavy multithread workloads. its a medium term investment not an every year upgrade imo. I'm coming from 5 year old 6700k so the jump to 8 core and IPC will be a nice jump as and when I decide. Waiting it out for a Nvidia 3080 and will see how it does with current setup first.

I think it's very unlikely Zen 4 will be next year. Or any mainstream DDR5 platform for that matter, given Rocket Lake isn't even due until March. Last we heard, AMD's internal roadmap has Zen 4 and DDR5 down for 2022. Given that it's taken 16 months to get from Zen 2 to Zen 3, with that being a product designed for existing motherboards and existing memory technology, built on an existing manufacturing process, it's just not plausible that Zen 4 arrives in a shorter timeframe with so many new variables in play. I'd wager it'll be at least 18 months before we see it. If there's any consumer desktop DDR5 platform in 2021, it'll be a HEDT one.

Precisely - It's all about actual performance, 5Ghz doesn't matter. Benchmarks and performance/£ for your intended use should be the main guide if you are deciding between Intel/AMD.
 
I am a potential buyer for the 5800X but the prices are around the same as an Intel 10900K so will probably go for the Intel since it will overclock all cores to over 5GHz.

I think you'll find it's the other way around. :)

The money you pay (£529) for a 10900K (10 cores/20 threads) gets you a 5900X (12 cores/24 threads).

The 5800X is around £100 cheaper.
