6 cores are simply enough today still for anything a normal user needs.

A normal user could live very happily with a decent dual core.

For undemanding tasks I don't get people's obsession with insisting on a set number of cores, a nice SSD and a decent graphics card will make more difference for the 'average' person.

If the "normal user" doesn't browse, play games at 1080p with semi-decent graphics card and doesn't multi-task with heavier apps.

Normal users dont have higher than 60hz screens, or at least tend to leave default vsync enabled, I expect quad core with HT is more than enough for the mainstream market. Adding more and more core's is starting to just become marketing hype for practical purposes, its done because they know the review media lap it up with all the encoding they do.

no chance, 2c4t computers struggle. i have been using laptop with 2c4t for remote connections - SLOW.

They could have christened the 12-core 5900X 5800X so to avoid such confusion.
5900 series is both 12 cores and 16 cores
Keeping continuity for whole Ryzen family.
r7 1800X 3800X, 5800X top 8 core
r7 1700X, 2700X, 3700X value 8 core
r5 1600X, 2600X, 3600X, 5600X top 6 core
r5 1600, 2600, 3600, (5600) value 6 core

AMD had to fit 12 and 16 cores in nomenclature above these.
Previous 16 core was Threadripper 1950X and 2950X, so r9 3950X made sense for 16 core. Thus r9 5950X
Screwed up the continuity on 12 cores tho, previous threadripper 12 cores were 1920X and 2920X. But r9 3900X and r9 5900X just looks better without the 20

The performance tier hasn't moved up from the old 8-core from 2017. In 2021 it's still 8-core:

From Ryzen 7 1800X to Ryzen 7 5800X AMD gained 60% higher performance (in CB R20 multi-thread), while increasing the frequency by 15% and the TDP by 10.5%..

If I have to buy a 500 series board to use these chips then the slim chance of me buying one has just evaporated.

Or the msi b450 mortar max that will be able to run the Ryzens 5000 series with a BIOS update, I read, hopefully in Jan but definitely coming.

Maybe, and even then it's so inconvenient having to borrow an old CPU to boot and update the BIOS.

This is not serious from AMD. Totally mediocre release so far.

No you don't need to. You put the usb flash drive in and press the button on the back, I'm sure but if you want one soon then don't get that because as I say you won't be able to until at least Jan.
