Hi

My PC which I built in 2008 is need of an upgrade.

It has CPU Athlon 64 X2 5600+ socket AM2 (2.8Ghz) on a a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard with 8GB of ram. Primary SSD Is
Sandisk Plus 240GB SATAIII 2.5inch SSD.

I use it manily for audio production and some video editing so run a lot of memory hungry virtual instruments/FX.

I read that this board will also support socket AM3.

When I first built this PC I tried to use a Phenom X4 but it ran too hot so did the X3 so had to swap it out.

I am LONG out of game when it comes to building or upgrading PCs so really don't know what my options are to get some more speed/capacity!

I don't want to spend a fortune, but hoping there is a reasonably priced upgrade I can make, but I'm not sure what will be supported.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Ash

There's no usefull update for that platform.
You'll need new motherboard (and memory) to use any CPU being reasonable upgrade.

What kind budget you had in mind?

Hi,

I'd start with these:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £630.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Modern 8-core/16-thread 65-watt processor, 32 GB DDR4-3600 RAM, X570 highest premium motherboard that supports much faster SSDs - like NVMe PCIe 4 compatible.
Do you need a graphics card?

Yeah you wont be upgrading that system I'm afraid. At best you can keep the case, but probably not wise as older cases are generally poor for airflow, plus it's unlikely to have any USB 3 headers.

As above what's your budget?

More budget friendly basis to start here.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £379.46 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Add these depending upon your need:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £187.63 (includes shipping: £11.70)

Add a graphic card appropriate to your needs.

Unfortunately as above your only real option is a fresh build. All of that hardware is very old, you can probably salvage the case and disk for now.
With that in mind it would depend on your budget and needs.

Content creation would favour higher cores/threads but will cost a lot more. However, if you use it for work then the time saved will earn your money back over time.
