Can't afford school meals for kids, but billions for homebuyers, sure!

I don't have any problem with helping out with children with meals, i just don't see why charity can't fill the gap rather than the government. People need to understand that the government shouldn't be this all encompassing entity that some people think it ought be, if you feel children need support then donate to charities that do just that rather than trying to force other people to via taxation

Have some of you not heard yourself, the world is going mad.
You're talking about children going hungry as a form of point scoring here, a lot of these parents HAD jobs and did pay for their own kids until this pandemic.

Let's hope you're not in need, then you might feel the helplessness and see the bigger picture here.

Kids should not go hungry, it's our job to keep them safe. They are our future.

Well yeah, obesity is a problem in general but especially among lower income levels.

Absolute poverty is rather rare in the UK, most of the coverage of this stuff is just signalling, people venting etc...
 
All them poor full-time-mummy's who smoke weed all day. What ever will they do now? Turn to prostitution? Or maybe smoke 1 less bag a week to feed the 3 kids?
 
Yeah I can't really understand as last year kids didn't get school meals in school holidays, I know we have covid this year but benefits haven't changed, in fact they have increased so surely parents have more money to feed their kids if they're not doing so then surely social services should be getting involved as obviously that child's welfare is not being met.

Unfortunately this Government have been throwing tax payers money through various prop up schemes to inflate house prices and make the rich richer for years and years, they should just scrap stamp duty holidays, help to buy and put interest rates back to 5% and house prices will be dictated by the natural market ,its not the savers fault people have got them selves into debt, not sure why savers should be punished.
 
Difficult one,one hand you have the spongers who have kids without ever having the ability to provide for then then you have people who did and lost their jobs.
Winder how many are of the 'tories starving my kids! But are probably blowing money on drugs, alcohol,gags or are under the social spotlight'
My parents were broke during the miners strike and struggled really badly as a result.

Every thread you raise OP is about how hard done by you are, I was brought up to work hard if I wanted nice things and you know what I have, why should I pay extra tax to pay for some slackers kids to get fed because they've spent their 'hard earned' JSA or UC on Sky TV, mobile phones and tablets

Exactly it's a misunderstood FACT that once you have kids your situation NEVER changes, you can't lose your job or one of you die or get sick and of course you become completely immune to the effects of a global pandemic. It's crazy that people don't know this, kids = financial security for life so why should society step in and feed starving kids when there's people like Dido Harding in desperate need of a couple of billion to maintain a spreadsheet?

I have nothing against a scheme that might help a less fortunate child get a decent meal. Through no fault of their owm some children are stuck with scummy parents. If you've never experienced it then you probably shouldn't pass judgment on them.

People always spout the same big tv crap too as if people living on a low income are somehow having an awesome life. Shops like Bright House target naive and poorer people who in a lot of cases are just trying to keep up appearences.

Us privileged people think its going to negatively impact us if the government spends some money on a scheme like this, but the reality is we will still continue to get our salary and still make our usual mortgage payments with no discernable impact on our lives.
 
I assume those saying that we shouldn’t roll this out during the pandemic also didn’t take any furlough money. It’s not the governments job to pay wages!

I think the point is here that most people would expect to see the parents make some cut backs first.

And if they aren't prepared to do that then why should we pay more?

A large portion of these families will have been on universal credit before covid and after so there is no real change for them, except they have had to do a bit more parenting, had more time to bond with their children while schools habd been closed.

Parents shouldn't have children on the assumption that they will be entirely paid for, fed, educated, clothed and brought up by the state, with no input from the parents.

Many people feel aggrieved that this is exactly what is happening and that irresponsible people are having children (or multiple) and literally handing off all responsibility to the state, and therefore us as tax payers while the parent simply benefits from free housing, free money, no other a life of luxury, but one of disregard for personal responsibility and sacrifice to make the family work.

I guess it's a tory government. So no point looking after the poor.

Side effect of having a demographics where wealth dictates who you vote for a guess.

I can't remember ever having such a fractured country as now with brexit, North South stuff, economy vs health

I'm a (champagne?) socialist. Happy for my taxes to support people in need. There's no moral argument against feeding kids during a global pandemic where people are furloughed, people are losing their jobs, and there is a huge amount of economic uncertainty. If you don't think society should support these children then I assume you're also anti NHS, all education should be privatised, all council services eliminated etc.

You have to draw the line somewhere between the state (society) and private industry\charity, but I am happy to draw that line after feeding starving kids, not before. Christ.
