i recently built my little sister a gaming pc.

specs : 3100 ryzen
500gb ssd
600w gold psu
2tb hdd

shes only 12 so it was abit of a budget built so what we did was we got a second hand 980 for around £60 from a friend.

it has been running fine for the last 3 monthsish? then the dilemma happened. my little sister thought it would be a good idea to use her pc as a coaster and rest her glass on top of the pc while filling the said glass with pepsi max. she failed miserably and poured a lot of pepsi into the air filter and into the pc.

managed to turn it off fast and try remove most of the liquid. luckily all that got fried was the gpu so being a good big bro i have given her my card since she doesnt have cpu graphics and i do.

so im currently running my pc off my onboard graphics ( 4790k graphics)

so my question is.

where do i go from here? i dont want to fully upgrade yet as i dont really game too much on pc atm.

will my onboard graphics run 1080p videos? do i get a second hand gpu? what would you guys do in my shoes.

thanks for any advice.

Your onboard graphics should play vidoes at 1080p no problem but if your gaming your going to need a gpu.

Grab a 980ti or rx 580 or buy a new gpu.

What do you want to do ?

What can you afford and do you have any preference for AMD or Nvidia? If you buy a new GPU now, you can carry over the card to your next upgrade.

no preference. i dont really want to spend loads but i also dont really want a downgrade haha. probs will have to do one of the two. whats the equivalent nowadays of the 980 / matches price wise?

I would think a 1650 Super/RX 580 would be there or thereabouts. If you can wait & the new AMD/Nvidia cards become plentiful, Thats probably going to be after Xmas because the 'bug' has increased demand for PC parts right now, Gamers want nice & shiny hardware on day release, said new cards will sell out like yesterday. Once demand has decreased the used market will be flooded with previous gen cards which will drive used prices down, so you could get a bargain if you a savvy enough.

cheers mate, i really dont game on pc that much and managed to pre-order a ps5 so time is on my side

I have recently upgraded to an almost identical setup as your upgrading and found a 1070/1650 super to be pretty much the sweet spot for performance to price for the CPU, you could always go higher to a 1080 but the price jump for performance wasn't really worth it to me.
