EDIT: Everything bought, how did I do? £600 gaming PC with Windows 10 to play COD

Always good to come in under budget, but £600 excluding the monitor opens up the option of a Ryzen 5 3600 for a bit more longevity to the system.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £639.88 (includes shipping: £0.00)

If you're buying everything specifically from OCUK this would be an idea.

I'd recommend adding another SSD down the line when funds allow for it.

AMD Option:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £613.92 (includes shipping: £0.00)

If you don't plan on ever upgrading the Intel build will be superior, if you think you might want to upgrade your CPU in a couple of years time you'll be better off with the AMD build.

You could probably save a bit more on the case, but I suspect a young lad will enjoy the RGB and the Aerocool One Mini is pretty good value at that price point. Mesh fronted so good airflow and it comes with four pre-fitted fans.

Both great suggestions, thanks!

Is there a big difference between the 1650 super and the 1660 super?

I'm wondering if the AMD would be better then because as he grows up what if he wants to play other games he can easily upgrade

I'd personally lean towards the AMD build, especially if you think you might upgrade it down the line.

1660S vs 1650S: https://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/2572?vs=2542

I'd spring the extra for the 1660S, I think the 1650S is already a little limited and the extra VRAM will be useful going forward.

Let's clarify this upgrade path thing.

Intel you still will be able to upgrade from the 10400f to a 8 core or even 10 core cpu.

AMD will offer you a wider range of cpu choice.

Cost will definitely be an issue, historically Intel CPU's tend to hold high value, even on the second hand market for some reason.

I fully expect the OP to be able to pick up a 3700X for £100-150 in a couple of years time.

I think with him being 11 his taste in gaming is only going to change as he gets older and more games come out so I think the AMD route would be more budget friendly since he has a sibling so the cost has to be spread equally etc

Looking at the 1660 supers, the cheapest ones seem to be the Palit, EVGA and ASUS and they all have 1 fan. Would you guys recommend those? Are they no different or is it best to stick with the 2 fan ones?

Spend the extra on a double fan model, the single fans are going to run louder and hotter.

Alternatively, if you can get an 8GB RX580 or RX590 for around £150 it could be worthwhile.

You might luck out with Black Friday if you're not in a rush to buy.

Cool, thanks!

Yeah I'm hoping black friday will be good for it. It's not so much the rush to buy more the time to build. She has to get the money together first and I work full time and I'm at uni too. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to build but I want to make sure it looks and runs smart for him.

Hopefully there will be a few deals on the older GPUs towards the end of the month. Have a look at reviews and prices for the EVGA GTX 1660 Super SC Ultra. I’ve always liked the EVGA cards, though the clown lips on the current 3000 models are pretty awful!

Is the RX 580/590 better than the 1660 super? Only because I've managed to get everything for £613 I think it is at the moment, so I'll just wait for prices to fluctuate etc and it should be fine.

I just need to pick a case he will like. Something along these lines

I've never bought a case with RGB like that, will I need to make sure the motherboard has certain connections for it?

They're a little slower, which is why I stated to only consider them if you can get them within a certain price range.

The Konlink Observatory would be fine, although for a similar style and price I'd go for this:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £61.99 (includes shipping: £0.00)

I expect you'll enjoy better build quality with the Lian Li and it's very well reviewed:

I do see Lan Li mentioned a lot, unfortunately I've only budgeted £50 for the case so I might have to look elsewhere or look for something similar

I saw one case I really liked but it didn't have a PSU shroud. Nice looking but there's nothing by the PSU worth looking at you might as well hide it! And a lot now with a little cut out to see the PSU label! I didn't see anything like that when I was building mine earlier this year.

second hand not an option?

Sorry, only just seen this!

I think with this being their first PC (I'm talking first as in his Mum didn't know that she could use it too or that he could use it for homework, she thought it was JUST for gaming) if anything goes wrong I don't want to be arguing with sellers on their behalf if that makes sense?

Today I managed to get my final part, so I have:

MSI b450 mortar max
512GB SSD
Crucial RGB 16GB 3200MHz
Ryzen 5 2600X with cooler
Corsair TX500M semi modular
Kolink Observatory Lite Mesh
GTX 1660 Ti
Wi-Fi dongle
Windows 10

For £607.69!

I'm pretty pleased with it at the moment in all honesty, got a few really nice bargains. Had to go pre-owned on the GPU so hopefully that turns out okay. I'm actually more concerned about it fitting in the case as the Kolink turned out to be taller than it is longer, I think the measurement is about 3-4cm out to be honest. Hopefully everything fits.
