Hi guys,

First time posting - thanks in advance for any help and advice you can give me. This post might well be a bit long but I want to cover everything in it!

Im looking to build a PC to game on.. play on Xbox currently, mainly FPS (COD Warzone atm).

I have an LG Ultragear 27-GL850-B monitor already so unless there’s grounds for upgrading that, I’d rather focus on the processing etc.

Budget is £1.5-2k (I know it's normal to want to reduce this where possible, and I'm grateful to have a good value for money list but i'm equally happy to spend a bit more for a rig that is futureproofed & built to last)

I had my eye on the Ryzen 7 3800X originally, and really wanted an RTX 3070 or 3080 then perhaps the Corsair 32GB 3600 CL18 but when I posted my original list on Reddit, one of the guys that came back to me advised that I was dramatically overspending and helped calm the parts list down.

The build i've got to is this:

https://uk.************.com/list/QmhRkX

I know I want a really strong GPU and processor, and the RAM & either 500GB or 1TB SSD are preferred also

Could someone have a look over this and let me know where i'm going wrong, whether it looks stable and whether it looks good value for what it is (and also wish me luck trying to find an RTX 3070 or 3080!)

*EDIT* - pasted rather than inserted the link, so have done it properly second time round

Not sure why the link to PC Part Picker doesn't work, but the build is as follows:

Ryzen 5 3600 CPU
be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 CPU Cooler
ASUS ROG STRIX B-550-F Gaming Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB DDR4-3600 RAM
ADATA XPG 1TB NVME SSD
Seagate Baracuda 2TB Internal HD
Fractal Design Meshify Case
Corsair RM 750W 80+ Modular ATX Power Supply

i would wait for the new amd cpu only a few days now and if ur spending that kind of money it will be worth it

It doesn't show because of this:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/help/boardrules/

msi b550 tomahawk is still cheaper.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-mag-b550-tomahawk-amd-am4-b550-atx-motherboard-mb-359-ms.html
Though that's expensive for old generation low end model.
(Zen3 architecture Ryzens are released in couple days)

If cooler costs even quarter of CPU you have priorities wrong.
Already Arctic Freezer 34 is more than enough for only six core.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arctic-freezer-34-cpu-cooler-120mm-hs-077-ar.html
And £43 Alpenfohn Brocken 3 is major overkill for lowly six core.

Thanks for your response EsaT, and apologies for linking content that goes against the rules - I should have checked.

I'm slowly starting to settle on the following build, and will be holding off until the release of the Radeon on 18th November before buying the GPU. I will also buy a non-SSD HDD at a later stage.

If you could perhaps provide feedback on this slightly tweaked build, that would be appreciated. Please also note that i've picked an Asus ROG Strix B550 Mobo which is £30 more expensive than the one you have listed, but if you think the MSI B550 is just as good, let me know - I've only kept the ASUS because I know that brand and have never heard of MSI before.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (£289.98)
Scythe Mugen 5 Black RGB 51.17 Cooler (£52)
Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (Wifi) ATX AM4 Mobo (£183)
Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 (£134)
Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD (£109)
Phanteks Eclipse P400A Digital ATX Mid-Tower Case (£79)
Corsair RM (2019) 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (£99.99)

The site i'm using to compile my list has listed the following as a potential problem too.. do you know whether this is right?

Some AMD B550 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vermeer CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS
https://uk.************.com/product...-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020195-na

What that means is the bios Will need to be updated before the cpu will work. There is a bios flashback button on the back of the motherboard which will allow you to do this

You need to download the latest bios for your motherboard and put it on a usb drive . Then put the usb drive into a dedicated usb flash port and press the button.

There are many guides online.

Thanks once again Micky - really appreciate it - any feedback on the build?
Looks pretty solid.

You will need to add another fan to your case for an exhaust I think it only comes with 3 at he front.

Take a look at the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro M.2 as am alternative to the sabrent

I've only kept the ASUS because I know that brand and have never heard of MSI before.
There's nothing special in Asus...
Well, except amount of brand overhype:
Their B450 chipset boards were basically brand scams and X570 boards have chipset cooler design straight from anus of brand hype marketroids.
In B450 boards MSI was actually only good maker and while X570 board range is mostly bad, their B550 boards are again good.
If not needing Wifi there would be even £150 level good for gaming PC options in B550 boards.

In properly designed boards updating BIOS is this "hard":

That Sabrent is somewhat pricy for QLC Flash, whose native unbuffered write speed is complete turd.
Hence it's price should be clearly lower than TLC Flash drives, like Kingston A2000.
And adata SX8200 Pro is very fast TLC drive.

Besides Mugen 5 being overkill for only six core Ryzen there's some risk potential in Intel optimized convex base coolers for chiplet design Ryzen.

This might have been about that:
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...-matching-or-beating-scythe-mugen-5.18902588/

Direct contact heatpipe coolers would have guaranteedly flat base from manufacturing process.
SilentiumPC Fortis 3 and especially Alpenfohn Brocken 3 would be pretty close to Mugen 5
