I'm in the fortunate position where I can get a new car and not feel like I'm going to send it to the moon with high miles within 2 years. Thanks COVID.

I had an F10 M5, the intention was to have it for 2 years, but I ended up keeping it for 3 and selling it on with 70k miles on the clock. Since, I had a requirement for more boot space but didn't want to compromise on performance too much so an S6 Avant took it's place. It's OK, but it's nothing compared to the M5.

Anyway, moving forward, I'm torn between keeping some practicality, but also enjoying more performance. The LCI F90 M5 calls to me, but I do see some issues. The alternative is something a bit different, which brings me to a 911 (992) 4S.

The M5: LCI - no option to spec a sunroof. Not bothered about a CF roof, but I do use, and would like a sun(moon)roof. Also, the option to spec the less ***** carbon/aluminium dash inlays and opt for the more refined gentlemanly finegrain wood is *currently* not an option, and it's uncertain if it will remain going forwards. Do I want a conventional 8 speed auto, no matter how good it is, it isn't the M-DCT 7Speed which was immense.

Arguably, I could buy used, but I cannot find a decent one in the colour I want (anything but black / silver / blue or shades of). Coming from Sakhir Orange, it needs to probably be Motegi or Aventuri Red. I also think I find the pre-LCI bodywork a bit more sensible.

911 4S: It's not a turbo, and I couldn't afford one i the timeframe I'm looking at. So, although power to weight is close, I can't help feel like the Porsche might feel slower. Also practicality, there is none really, so it would really be a very occasional use vehicle. The M5 only comes in Competition package now, so performance is handsome.

Curveballs: E63S Wagon / New Audi RS6 Avant (both well received amongst reviewers).

Leaning towards the M5, but would value some concise "have you thought about" responses.

If considering a family wagon in the same breath as a 911 why not think about going down the two car route. Grab something cheapish but reasonable quality like Volvo V90 then get something that's a bit more of an event.

I think you need to rethink you’re requirements if you’re looking at an M5 or a 911 :/

The 911 is a complete itch, and as I say, neither car will be used very much, but the M5 offers at least some practicality. Given neither will be used significantly, that was the sole reason the 911 came into focus. It offers something different to me, yet it needs to honour what I would expect the performance of the M5 to be like, not just be a Porsche 911.

911 has excellent practically with rear seats for stuff and a frunk.

Then you could look super cool and get a roofbox :D

If you don’t need 5 series, 4 door practicality, then surely it’s 911 all day long? Would be for me.

991 GTS 4. Won’t be as fast as the M5 on paper, but will feel it.

911 will hold its value far better too.

It will be new, so no GTS 4 yet (992 4 S would be the model I'm interested in). That still, given it's weight advantage over the M5, has a split second difference to 62 and a similar (un) restricted top speed. I suspect in real world driving it will feel as quick, but BMW have a happy knack of underplaying their BHP/performance figures. It's also far far easier to spec an M5. Practically all the options I would want are available in 3 simple packs. The Porsche configurator is like a throw back to the WHSmith pick'n'mix wall.

@Django x2

As you have other practical cars, then the 911 4s.

Another M5 will only leave you wanting the 4s again.

But with your Mike Lowrey level of trust fund, why not just 911 Turbo, albeit I appreciate you won't get a queue jump.

Turbo is off the table sadly, I don't want to wait that long and the cost is too prohibitive, again, with the candy store options, it's too much. I want someone to spec the car with the things I use the most. BMW do this very well.

Depreciation.

M5 will be hit a lot harder than the M5.
Owner of Autobrite went from an M5 think AWD model to the 992 4S and he says the 4S is far more a sports car and feels more special than M5.

Both are silly fast, I'd say you really cannot go wrong with either and if the value in 2-3yr is a consideration I'd say the 911 will hold its value better than an M5.
