Looking for suggestions on upgrades

Hey folks

Friend of mine bought a second hand system, and is experiencing some fps issues in some basic games.

He's basically just wondering what kind of upgrades would be necessary to update his system, affordably to run games efficiently.

Motherboard: asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0
GFX Card: EVGA SSC GTX 1050Ti 4GB
CPU: AMD FX 8350 4.00GHz 8/8 core
RAM: 16GB 1600mz Corsair Vengeance
Power Supply: Kolink KL-600W PSU Plus Bronze

Thanks in advance for any tips :)

Well sad to say the only thing you can really keep is the PSU, if you upgrade the cpu, you need new motherboard and new ram
Basically its not really an "upgrade" as it is "build a new PC and steal the PSU out of the system"

Fair enough! What's like, the new baseline requirements for games now then to have a suitable upgrade? Any chance you could link some stuff as examples?

Dunno if it makes a difference but he has this as a case for the system

Well, I am a big Intel fan boy, so in a budget range you can pick up an i3 or i5 9th generation, I currently am running an i5-8600k still and a 1080ti and am getting some decent frames running in 1440p
Intel i5-9400F - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1151-processor-retail-cp-66k-in.html
Intel i3-9400F - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...ocket-lga1151-processor-retail-cp-673-in.html
These would pair with any Z390 mobo such as - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus...cket-1151-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-6cz-as.html

Also, these are decent ram sticks, Im currently running them myself for about 4 years now - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/team...-3200mhz-dual-channel-kit-grey-my-0ak-tg.html
But an 8gb kit will still be good but 16gb helps future proof aswell, anything from 3000mhz to 3600mhz will be more than plenty

Now I don't know much about AMD but I know with the new 5000 series the 3000 series is a really good CPU to get at this time so that might be worth looking into if.

And with the new GPU releases, you won't get amazing performance out of the 1050ti but it will do for now, just don't expect anything amazing out of it. If you wait for some time for the 30XX to get steadier stock and the AMD RX series to gain more aswell, you can most likely pick up a 1080ti or even a RTX20 series on the cheap for a couple hundred.
You may need to upgrade the PSU if you go for a higher GPU however.

Sorry if this is a mess, I don't really use the forums that much and I am actually in work so I'm not meant to be browsing forums, it's queue update day for the 3090 so I cant keep away.
If you have a rough budget I can probably help more but that is essentially a very similar setup to what I'm running and mine cost me almost double what you would have to pay now. You can definitely run the latest games in 1080p with this if you upgrade the GPU, as I said I game in 1440p and I have a 144hz refresh rate and I maintain steadily above it.
Also maybe grab a 240gb SSD for faster boots if it does not have one already.

Cheers for your reply mate.

The current SSD is a 240GB Patriot Burst SSD so it should be fine with that, runs alongside a 1TB Seagate HD.

I'll pass these recommendations over to my mate and see what he says about affordability etc! I appreciate the response! :)

If you are playing at 1080p a 1060 6gb used would be a good upgrade or even a RX580.
My chum runs this same spec as yours with a 1060 and it has no problems running 1080p on a 60 fps monitor.
The 1050 card is the problem, both the others are at least 40% faster. +-
But as the chaps are saying the machine is getting on now perhaps it is time to spend a few quid.

That is true, but I would still recommend waiting and getting the 80 or a 20 series as their prices have dropped hard
For example the RRP of the 2080ti is about £700 less than it used to be, as a brand new card its only £650, second hand it can sell for £450 upwards.
And the 1080ti is selling anywhere between £250 and £350, you could also split the difference with an ASUS 2060 super for around £300
But also keep in mind that these prices are still going to drop more, people are selling their cards for the 30 series and Big Navi, once the stock levels out that 2080ti brand new could be down another £100-200 as the 3070 is slightly faster than it for £100 less and that card isnt even in 90% of peoples machines yet.

EDIT: I also forgot the 1080 which actually sells on ebay for roughly the same price as the 1060 right now as there is more of them floating around right now.
And while the 1060 can perform quite a bit better than the 1050-ti, around 50% better,
in a game such as pubg, while it will break the 60fps mark, it would only get around 20fps more at maxed out settings, while the 1080 at almost the exact same price range is almost tripling that performance bonus for around £10-60 more

This good advice.

why get a 9400F when the 10400F is the same price and has hyperthreading.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £277.43 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Damn that's not bad at all!! Would that set up match alright with the current GPU or would that also need an upgrade?

A newer GPU would be better but this should still give much more stable FPS at 1080P even with the current one.

I would definetly try a pick a GPU up 2nd hand,

GTX 1070 1070ti 1080 1660 super are all good candidates if you can snag one for around £150.

Because the performance gain on the 10th gen is literally 1% and requires a different chipset
The mobo you linked is also a micro atx limiting his expansion.
And the H410/B360/H370 chipset for it limits the ram speed, he can max out at 2933mhz compared to the full 4000mhz capable on the Z390 chipset
He would need to pay even more for the Z490 chipset for the full potential of the 10th gen CPU
So while the 10th gen has hyper threading and is the same cost of the 9th gen, the Z390 would have more potential for the same price than the H410 chipset for the same price or the Z490 at a higher price.

Personally I would go for the 9th gen with the faster ram speeds for a cheaper cost than limiting myself with that chipset or paying more for the Z490 chipset

Having hyperthreading means the OP would be good for many years without the need to change CPU or buy expensive ram whereas 6/6 is already struggling in some of the newer games which make use of the extra threads also spending more now on a motherboard and ram would mean less money for the GPU which is arguably the most important part in a gaming build.

If OP does intend to spend more then going ryzen over an old 9th gen Intel would be a better option as it has a much better upgrade path.
