hi

its that time again, and i've been happy enough with the last build that i'm not at all current with pc hardware at all. i've much appreciated the advice in here previously, so back for more please...

i'm looking to get my son into his own pc, i keep having to throw him off mine to use it and its getting beyond a joke. he's happy with gaming on my machine and would be happy to be gifted this as a starting point to upgrade from himself.

i'm therefore looking at either just grabbing a similar spec machine for him, or using the opportunity to upgrade myself. i had been thinking about moving to 144hz 1080 to play bf4. going forward ill probably look at the next BF when released. might go to 1440p, doubt i'd do 4k games

currently:

i5 6600k @ whatever an easy stable overclock gave me, can't even remember lol.
asus z170 pg
16gb of some ddr4 stuff.
evga 1060 6gb
ssd's
mostly bf3,4 1080p @60hz

ignore monitors, cases, storage, peripherals etc, what would you suggest spending 500-1k on? cheers.

My basket at overclockers uk:
Total: £745.01 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Just add a case you like and a graphics card, something like a 5700xt which you may be able to find a nice discount would be good. Wait for black friday to see if you can save a few tenners and add to the GPU budget.

Start by preordering an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and a GeForce RTX 3070.
What's your current power supply? If it's 80+ 650W or better you can re-use it.
On Black Friday/Cyber Monday have a look for any RAM, motherboard, CPU cooler (optional, the 5600X comes with a basic cooler) deals.

thanks for the replies, you time is much appreciated.
i will grab a psu, and will need faster ram.
is ryzen the way to go now then? i had a looky after posting this thread last night and was heading toward an i59600kf and asus z390p, then add ram and gpu. looked a lot cheaper than latest revision chips for not too much performance hit.
what are the pre order wait times like on the ryzen, do we know?

top call on black friday, i'd forgotten that... :D

If your going intel 9400f makes more sense if budgets tight and you don't need a z390 motherboard.

9600f or 3600

Amd offer greater upgrade choice.

If you aren't planning upgrading that, more expensive upgrades elsewhere become fast questinable.

1440Hz 2560x1440 monitors start from £300 level.
VAs little below, IPS little over.

Intel is now dead on water with future upgrade chances.
Ryzen 3600 now would give good upgrade in heavier games with more threads.
And you could later (year or two) upgrade from discounts to higher core count Zen3s beating Intel both in single threaded and multithreaded.
