Virgin Media Discussion Thread

From the article:
Sadly, the new M600 tier is not currently available as either a standalone broadband or dual plan (broadband and phone) package, which does at least help to give their quad play bundle something a little more unique. On the other hand, most people would struggle to harness all of that downstream speed.

However going by the comments those on just 500 without the other crap are being upgraded.

The blerb from VM suggest other boosts are coming again. Waiting for my boost from 100mbit, which is why I've stayed on it rather than going to 200.

I'm on an M500 quad bundle but still won't get it. I wouldn't take the comment on the article as gospel as when I spoke to VM last week, they told me I'd need to upgrade to ultimate oomph to get it. They did, however, tell me that Gig1 should be available in my area soon so when I renew I'll likely scrap all the other crap and just go with that on its own.

I am on 200 Mbs. It is fine for general internet usage by the family including watching Youtube and generally HD streaming of movies.

It does struggle sometimes with higher quality, higher bitrate streams (20+ Mbps) even on ethernet connected devices like my Shield.

I am planning on purchasing a 4K OLED and wll then want to stream 4K UHD movies. I don't think 200 Mbs will handle 4K streaming.
I would also like to use GE Force Now for game streaming (similar to Google Stadia) but haven't done so yet.

Will their 500 Mbps stream 4K movies and high bitrate content with ease ?

Separately, is Gigabit worth an extra £30/month over 500Mbps for the above usage ?

Well it seems to struggles. I have tested the speed and I get 150+ Mbps but if I stream 1080P content with high bitrate of over 20 Mbps it starts to buffer.

Something else is wrong there then. As long as nothing else is saturating the network then 150Mbps is enough to stream even the highest bitrate content on the streaming services, for example, AppleTV Dolby vision content.

Does anybody know how are existing customer deals going? My parents need to renew - they will cancel the Tv Package (lowest package they do) and just stick with Broadband.

Sounds more like that you’re in an oversubscribed area. I only have 60 Mbit and I can streak 4K just fine.

I'm thinking of chinning off my Sky broadband (I've TV, BB and phone) package as its now costing us £42 a month but I'm only getting 40mb down and 15mb up. With me gaming, streaming, uploading videos to YouTube and the wife watching Netflix, the speed just isn't cutting it at the minute.

How good is the VM BB? Obviously it's lightning fast but one thing Sky BB is amazing at is its reliability. Is the process straightforward enough moving from one to the other?

Also, I take it I can use Virgin BB and phone but keep my SKY TV?

Virgin reliability and speed is very much dependent on your area. I've had it in two parts of the same city, the first time the speed was awful and it was constantly going down. Since moving, I hit a constant 10% above the rated speed and have no reliability issues.

Virgin won’t know or care if you have Sky TV etc. you can run multiple lines from different providers if you want. The process is you order via virgins website (using Quidco/TCB for the £135+ cash back) and Virgin come along and install a cable to the property in a room of your choice, they won’t mess about in your loft or lift floorboards or climb about on roofs etc. the feed will come via the front of the property and will be trenched 6” deep officially. You need to give Sky 30 days notice to disconnect, I would suggest just in case of issues you book the disconnection on Sky for a date after your VM install, VM offer a money back guarantee if you need to use it, Once Sky the Sky line is gone, it’s a longer and more complex process to get reconnected again.

Reliability can and does vary by area, generally areas that have issues get upgraded, but it isn’t much fun if you are stuck in an overly congested area waiting for that to happen.

Thank you. Great info. The speeds look great on paper but from both of those replies I get the impression the customer experience isnt that great.... a bit hit snd miss..
