Anyone have experience with privacy glass?

We're looking at a loft extension whereby the second bathroom will be in the dormer. There's great views over the city and over to the suspension bridge, so we want to make the most of it. We've seen some on our road that utilise a full-width window, but that's only say 500mm high and runs at head height, it's an amazing effect when you're stood up as it looks like a framed pictured, but if you're in the bath... you'll just be facing a wall.

Has anyone got any experience/advice/recommendations with privacy glass/one-way glass that would span the entire wall (circa 2870mm wide)?

Apart from the cost, which will be high given the near 3m span, any glazer should be able to produce something tinted.
What is access like in to the space?
Have you had a window designed that will take that size pane?

Yeah looked at the above. It seems no such thing as one way glass works in all lighting (ie bathroom lights on, dark outside). Would need to do some digging and find examples of something like a 2/3rd frosted/mirror split with blinds to see if looks any good or just crud.

I had a piece of that shiny reflective film off a mate to stick on summer house windows - you could see out but not in. It was only a experiment but it did work and kept the sun from making it too hot..

I have mirror film on my computer room window and it's only one way if the light is off indoors. Put the light on and it's like a slightly tinted window so you can clearly see inside. It's brilliant at keeping the room cooler and free of glare from the sun but useless as a privacy glass at night. We do have frosted film on our shower screen which works very well although I am not sure I would depend on it for a window.

Trying to think outside the box. How about a really dark tint or frosted tint or glass at the bottom half?

So it covers privates and up to your belly button. So if someone does see you it's only with your top off.

You could also incorporate blinds to cover the top if need be time to time.

Or mirror tinted film and install a light outside or two shining at the tint on a switch controlled from the inside.

Just trying to think of anything that might work or help.

Another option is privacy film. That way you get a very clean junction between the bottom ( privacy filmed ) and top ( clear ).
There are two types, static and sticky. Both are pretty easy to apply and can be easily removed and replaced. The static is far easier to remove but is also far more likely to start falling off after a few years.

Yeah, having looked on Houzz etc for inspo I think we'll most likely consider full-height/width windows (probably split into 2-4 panes depending on cost... no rear access so 1 is impossible), with the lower 2/3rds frosted and the upper 1/3rd privacy film... potentially with blind(s) or curtains too.

I presume it's possible to privacy film the entire window, and then apply the frosting on top of that, but that's a question for the film suppliers.

Something like this:

Something to bear in mind as we have frosted glass on our bathroom window:

We have a bath with a shower integrated into the tap and the bath is under the window. When you're showering, you are stood more-or-less in front of the window (hence the frosted glass). However, if the bathroom light is on, you can still see into the bathroom from outside to a certain degree. You can clearly make out the 'figure' of someone in the shower so it's not 100% private.

As such, we still have a blind on that window for showering.

It's a double-glazed panel and only one side is frosted, so it might perform better at refraction if both panels were frosted, but I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable showering at night without the blind down.

Yeah, I've seen that from the other side so to speak :D. We're not planning on having a shower up against the window, it'll be up against the rear wall with no back lighting but yeah, will still look at blinds or curtains anyway.

It depends how close your neighbours are... let it all hang out!

The picture you’ve posted above is amazing, however a bath with a view is also awesome and you should think about a nice blind so you can soak in the view.

I find it depends if you are male or female. Female and the neighbors curtains all twitch, male and the police turn up.
