External 4G antenna for router

Hello,
I live in an area where we can't get fibre-optic and the quickest connection possible is a 1MB download speed and about 2 upload (yes it's that bad)... I spoke to a chap near me who is using mobile home broadband where he has a 4G sim router and the internet connects through the 4G. He gets upto 40 mbps. I went for the same option, but my signal is no where near as good to where he lives unfortunately, but someone mentioned an external antenna which will fit into my router, but would need to be put up outside on the house etc like a sky dish. I'm happy to try this, but I'm wondering if it will actually improve the signal and speeds and latency? The router I have is a Huawei b535 which does have antenna ports on the back to connect a antenna too. Any thoughts would be great. I believe I have found out where the nearest mast is also so I was thinking an OMNI DIRECTIONAL antenna in that direction then straight into the router. I just don't want to go ahead and do all this if it's not going to help, but reviews have said it does

The best antenna will be a directional antenna and you'll either want one that has two outputs or you'll need 2 antennae.

An omnidirectional antenna grabs signal from all around and is good if you don't know where the strongest signal is coming from, but they tend to have lower overall gain (improvement). Poynting are probably the best known brand in this area. Their stuff tends to be very good, but it can be quite pricey.

Thanks for the reply! Do you think it will improve my latency for gaming or not really? I have a feeling it might just improve signal and download speeds

No, I can't see any reason why the latency would improve. Ultimate download speed yes, but latency not really.

Ah, okay. It's a difficult one because I'd need to pay for the antenna and then someone like a TV ariel guy to put it in correct location so looking around 160 pounds all in all easily. I mean if it improves download speeds then maybe, but was hoping to improve latency as I play a lot of online games. Maybe a powerline adapter so I can at least have a wired connection. I did a speed test this afternoon and the ping was ranging from 45-60. That's not too bad I guess, it's just online gamers have 5-20 ping and have a much quicker advantage!!

Anything that involves radios and hops between systems is always going to have worse latency than a cable. Have you considered fishing as a pastime?

lol

I was in the same boat as you and was trying to get external antennas for my B535-232.

I tried 2 pairs and they were all garbage.

Unfortunately only premium quality stuff is really worth it. I learned that.

My ping is 35ms so in a EU hosted server im looking at at least 100ms...

Stick to World of warships and civ 6 (and fishing :P) Although i disagree with about the latency there too.... I used to pole fish a lot and being able to whip in those little roach every 20 seconds won me a few local comps :)
