3080 Coil Whine

I will use it a while and hopefully it will go away - how long does it normally take to go? If it doesnt go can you return it on coil whine as its annoying

Try undervolting the card also and see how you find it. It may improve over time though but its not guaranteed.

In terms of returning you will likely end up with a card with the same or similar levels.

Obviously pushing many more frames than your previous GPU? and much more power. My 2080Ti is about the same. And after 10 cards (literally) nothing changed. Very annoying. I have sinced moved my pc about 10ft away. No longer an issue.

I really shouldn't have to undervolt it to remove the noise (if that indeed works!)

I tested in the menus of Warzone and i can always hear it whatever the FPS.

When i put the FPS limit to 40 - it is still just as loud but changes the tone of the noise.

Just wondering do you wear headphones when you play games? Think that my 3090FE has some coil whine but with the other case fans + valve lighthouses I dont notice it.

My undervolted 2080Ti can run 60% reduction to power. 5% reduction to performance. Usually run at 2ghz 24/7 around 30% power drop over stock with 80 more MHz!

Well worth doing with any card IMO.

Can you tell me how to do this?

ctrl + F in MSI afterburner. Let’s say the card at stock is keeping 1900mhz.

Look at the very right hand side of the curve on max voltage and click the dot and note the number. Let’s say it’s 2100mhz.

Put -200 into the core clock to match 1900mhz and then click apply. The voltage curve will change. Then adjust the furthest dot away you want to test with. Let’s say it’s 975mv. Click the 975mv dot and adjust that to match 1900mhz.

Then click apply it will set a straight line curve so 975mv = 1900mhz. Load up a game and test if stable reduce so 950mv is 1900mhz etc etc. Just make sure you test properly just like an OC.

If anything it means identicle performance for less heat, less noise and your card theoretically should last longer as it’s under less stress.

Which afterburner should i get for 3080?

4.6.2
4.6.3 Beta 2 / 3 / 4 / 8?

Cheers

4.6.2 is probably best. As long as the card shows up as a 3080 and you can adjust settings it will be fine.

If not then maybe you will need the beta but I wouldn’t have thought so.

Load up and see what the core clock is running at (in game after the card has warmed up) and aim for that undervolted if you want identicle performance.

My MSI 3080 Gaming X had coil whine at idle... In games it wasn't much different. I found that Asus RBG software (armoury) was causing it, though no idea how. Perhaps it was trying to access the RBG on the GPU, and the GPU wasn't happy? Either way, first time I witnessed coil whine at the desktop. If I read someone else reporting this, I doubt I'll believe them :p

In games the coil whine returns, but is extremely minor and not audible over the games, so not an issue for me.

Ever since I've been using my shiny new Asus 3080 TUF OC, I've been hearing this noise: https://youtu.be/7_v17W7r0A8

Especially when loading games (or in the menus) such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, but other titles as well.
Now I'm suspecting it could be that Corsair PSU. I don't think I've ever seen the fan on that PSU come on in the past, but now there must be such an enormous power draw...!

Does anyone recognise this noise? Thoughts? Thanks!

Well you can try and stop the fan and see it makes the same sound. However, i would put my money on the GPU.

The fan comes on when the GPU hence why i think it could still be the GPU.

If you run Heaven bench mark and no CPU load that might reduce the power draw to just GPU as the CPU will be ticking over and with luck, the fan won't come on to help you test.

I've opened the case and tested it again. The noise starts as soon as the fans on the PSU start spinning.

And the fans start spinning because the 3080 is drawing power.
3080s are known to have coil whine, it's in all the reviews. Mine has mostly gone now but it was quite noticeable when I first got it

Any one else who just got the 3080FE notice coil whine when in a game...

Mine is really loud still when playing Doom Eternal (fps unlimited - hitting around 140fps) and Warzone (unlimited - hitting around 150fps).

Its less noticable if I cap it to 60fps, but I shouldn't have to do that!
