My Mondeo estate has bit the dust so it's time to replace it.

I need a large safe car to transport myself and the family about. I think obvious choices are probably Mondeo, Superb, and Passat.

Ive not spent so much on a car before so I want less than 80k miles on it and for it to be not much older than 5 years max.

I'm open to mpv, SUVs and 4*4s etc but I have a soft spot for estates.

Vag group isnt so reliable these days is it?

Any input appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 2015 Civic Estate, I think its 624 liter boot with the seats up, mines a 1.8 petrol in SR spec so leather and adjustable suspension, electric heated seats and whole load of other stuff I never use, extremely reliable

You need to rev it to get sort of power out of it so if you prefer torque avoid it, they did do a 1.6 diesel engine. My only gripe with it is the infotainment system or whatever its called, I cant mirror my phone or anything like that but it does the job

I have two very young kids and have zero issues transporting the whole family with the car

The Superb is highly regarded. Is it just 5 seats you need and a big boot?

Yeah anything to comfortably fit a child seat, 1-3 adults and occasionally a dog in the boot.

The civic appeals due to the Japanese aspect. Ive always loved jap cars for reliability and i even have a soft spot for Jap wagons like Stepwagon and Elgrand etc.

I considered an avensis but damn that car is dull.

Doesn't he want an Estate?

Your post prompted me to start looking at Autotrader for sub 8s 0-60 estate cars made after 2015,

In my opinion based on that you should be looking at the below:

Thanks for replies guys.

So my initial thoughts...

Mazda 6, nice looking car. Something I will look over.

Skoda octavia. I always found myself avoiding them because I had a preference for the superb. I do like large cars. I will look at octavias though. Should VAG reliability worry me?

Volvos.. I have a strange old man love for volvos but then I read reviews and they tend to come up pretty average when it comes to driving experience.

BMWs. - Always wanted a 5 series touring but they are overpriced for age. 3 series dont really appeal to me in the same way.

I've found myself looking at these now and I do see the appeal. The reviews are quite solid.

I wish Honda family vans like stepwagons or the Honda odyssey had diesel engines.

does this look okay? Do you think its worth finding one with leather / SR spec etc.

I paid that over a year ago with a much higher spec, same age and mileage from Fords Of Windsford with one previous owner and FHSH

Appreciate its from a main dealer but for the mark up they put on I would try and find one thats from a trusted used garage if you can and you'll save a lot or get a lot more for your money, granted thats not an easy task as they are quite rare but if you have time on your side its worth it. When I was looking main dealers wanted £2k more for SE Nav spec

When you say much higher spec, what kind of thing does yours have over that one? leather + ?

I cant remember the exact spec of the SE but mine has -

Adjustable dampers, heated leather, nav, dual zone climate, auto lights and wipers, auto stop, parking sensors, rear camera, start/stop, city breaking, auto mirrors, follow me home lights, key activated windows and mirrors, there is more I cant remember it all and half of it I dont even use especially at the moment it was just a no brainer for me to buy this one over the ones available at the dealers at the time, I was really after a Black Edition which is all show and no spec

That does seem quite exhaustive. I'm looking at SR ones now and it seems you got a good price. I'm being quite particular about service history and mileage if I am spending 10k. I want this car to last me for 5-10years. There is a black edition for sale and I agree, the spec is average.

I got lucky I think thats why I jumped on it I hoped it would hold its value a little better than the other specs and it was cheaper, if you can wait I'm sure something will come up I was looking for a couple of months I think

I probably can manage for a month but not much longer. The appeal of that vertu one is partly the dealer network / delivery aspect because im having to use missus car which causes nursery faff etc. Ill keep an eye out though.

I do still have a strange loyalty to mondeos too so keep checking that market.

Its annoying when you finally get some cash together and get scared of making bad decisions.

Yeah I hate buying cars and selling them. Selling them private obviously gets you more money but then you're without and it causes issues especially with kids so I just trade them in now

Best thing about a Honda is as long as it's got full history it'll be fine just make sure there is no accident damage. I steer well clear of most other brands because they seem to have all sorts of random issues, lost count of how many Honda and Toyotas I've owned and every one of them have been absolutely fine
