EV general discussion

I took delivery of my Polestar 2 Finally on Tuesday. Let me share my notes on it from the facebook group i posted in

OK... here is my early review based on the last two days of ownership - i can't go to the shop for a coffee without finding some road somewhere to put the foot down. It has in my opinion been well worth the wait.
  • The Power is just incredible, instant delivery, it is like hitting a switch and the power just being there.
  • Car looks are great to my eye, others may disagree, mine is standard void, no extras
  • Internally, it's a really nice place to be - the modern infotainment system with Google Maps, Assistant etc is lightyears ahead of my 5 Series (2016 Model). Spotify for music has me playing exactly what I want when I want because I don't have to navigate annoying menus etc or use my phone
  • The seat fabric worries me slightly as I have a baby on the way, may be looking for some tips on how to keep them clean / product recommendations
  • Love the glass roof, never had one before, really cool
  • The main key(s) will never see my pocket, they are shocking - activity key only and looking into getting a second for the wife. App will be good but I'd still want something physical
  • Did i mention the power is incredible
  • Cup holder... bit of an awkward position for the way I rest my arm, not a deal breaker... also the second cup holder is within the centre storage... bit of a pain for the wife's drink!
  • The value for money. I have this on a company car lease for 4 years, the BIK rate makes the cost of "ownership" on this car possibly one of the best deals I have ever had. Add on free Charge Point network in Scotland and I could feasibly never pay for charging it ( i will charge at home for convenience)
  • My delivery experience was bordering on shambolic at times and took me escalating to the COO via twitter and email to get the right level of car and attention. To his credit, Edward at Customer Support was great, but severely limited in his scope to have impact.
  • Wireless phone charging, it works sometimes, sometimes with the phone in the same position it doesn't
  • The "Frunk" should be a proper door, not a space under the standard car bonnet opening with manual lever pull opener - it's very low tech for a high tech car.

Another P2 FB member on OcUK.
I'm currently averaging 52 kWH / 100 miles, but it's new so that will probably improve once the novelty factor wears off.

Moving it is fine but they need to get the infrastructure sorted and they need to work with manufacturers to start getting the prices down because at the moment unless you want a beat up i3 the cost of electric cars is just way out of limits for most households.

The article is barely worth looking at for the reasons that Mr Fox mentioned. I’ll also point out that it’s a non target if the definition of petrol/diesel car has not changed from previous government proposals - that being only the ban on sales of pure petrol/diesel, not hybrid models.

I doubt there will be many pure petrol/diesel on the market by 2030 anyway. The emission standards, fleet emissions targets and consumers shifting to crossovers/SUVs will soon sort that out.

The more people move to crossovers the more electrics and hybrid versions they have to sell because the pure ICE versions will push up their fleet emissions. It will get to the point where almost all of them will need to be at least hybrid to meet the target anyway.

not seen one in the flesh yet -
Is the seating position noticeably higher, more upright, in the suv direction versus the 5 series ? google seems to say it is just 10cm higher 1.478 vs 1.467, so, maybe, not.

People will keep old cars running for much longer. But no way the country will be ready by 2030, there is WAY to much to do. It's going to take longer than that just to build new power stations.

We will just get to 2029 and it will quietly get extended back to 2040. They are only saying 2030 now to shut the green lobbyists up.

I think it's a genuinely bad thing for people who like cars.

Think about it - did we need legislation to force people to buy petrol cars instead of using steam wagons or horses? No - because petrol cars were more convenient, easier to drive, easier to use and simply better. The market decided - a superior technology came along and naturally took over.

If electric vehicles are the superior technology then there is no need to legislate to ban petrol engined cars. Why would anyone want a petrol car in 10 years time if an EV is just as convenient?

Mostly because it's more about the environment i'd have thought.

No one is saying electric cars have no draw backs and are superior to an ICE in all aspects but they're a very reasonable compromise for almost all people and will help clean up the air.

I think if the charging infrastructure improves and we can get some pretty fast chargers I can't foresee them being a worser option than a conventional vehicle. I guess yes money comes into it, but you have to consider the savings on fuel and as the technology matures it will become cheaper.

In which case there is absolutely no need to ban petrol cars as the market will naturally shift and it'll do so without destroying the enthusiast market which must have a negligible environmental footprint on its own.

As was posted above - the (large) benefit isn’t found in the vehicle but the environment.

The market will resolve the issue, it’s the Government giving it a nudge along.

Pretty sure in your horse example there was a transition period for investment and construction of the refuelling infrastructure.

I completely agree, I'm a car fan and I would hate for Petrol vehicles to be banned - But I do see a massive benefit in the world going greener, that's why I'm happy to adopt an electrical vehicle, and the plus points are to me that I can charge it at the office during the day, so I can drive in a Polestar 2 for about £400 a month and never pay a penny for fuel, it'll do 0-60 in around 4s, how much would it cost me in fuel to fuel a conventional vehicle?

And you didn't even need them to make it illegal to sell you a BMW M3 for you to decide to make that choice....

So tonight I realised the benefit of pre-conditioning.

Since I got the car on Tuesday I’ve done a couple of short run drives & four trips to school and back of 1.5 miles each. This has been hammering efficiency bringing my average consumption up to 52 kWh/100mi - not good !!
Tonight I set pre-conditioning on for 20minutes before setting off and straight away the energy usage was down to 30 kWh/100mi and by the end of the journey it was at 28.
