Time for car insurance renewal. What are you all using?

I always go through a specialist broker because my cars are generally old, modified, or both.

Currently my V70R and my E30 are both insured via a broker called NeedToInsure, one is on a Markerstudy modified car policy, the other is on a Markerstudy modified classic policy.

This means my mods are covered, and I can set up agreed value, and so forth.

For stop-gap/cheapy cars I tend to use a comparison site and go with the cheapest, which is usually Admiral.

I wouldn't recommend Admiral for any other reason though.

I bounce between Churchill and Hastings, they come up near the top of comparison sites for me every year.

It's currently Churchill, but will see what's what come November when renewal hits.

Both have been fine, but I'm fairly boring, no claims, no contact, etc.

Cheapest quote i can find!

Oh wow is this a new concept?

Seriously I'm amazed how some people manage to do anything.

Im willing to bet Google has the correct answer too.

Personally for anything to do with domestic stuff I use money saving expert dot com. It has a whole section dedicated to most things and car insurance is one of them.

Thanks all, I will start with comparison sites and then go to my current insurance. Its a yearly pain going through this process but I suppose if you want to save a few quid, there is no choice .

My insurance renews with Churchill in 2 days. Fantastic company. My renewal quote was £698, or £798 if I carried on paying in instalments. I just called them to say I wasn't happy with that and they've knocked it down to £515. I just paid in one go to save paying about another £70 in instalments.

Fantastic company that were happy to take nearly £200 extra off you just because...

For the last two years it's been notably cheaper for me to stay with AXA (even when changing car) than to go anywhere else. No idea what it is or what it could be, but they are literally £hundreds cheaper than any quote I've either got through comparison sites or directly with insurance companies.

My last couple of years of both bike and car insurance it's been cheaper to pay my renewal than go with anything on a comparison site by a decent chunk somehow.

I agree. I thought I was being penalised for informing them of my non fault accident in July when my neighbour totalled my bumper, but Churchill told me they hadn't increased it for that, it was just that they had increased premiums for everyone.

Still, pretty much all insurers increase their premiums each year don't they? I must admit though I was surprised by the sharp increase in April when I changed from the Peugeot to the Auris. But I'm happy they wanted to keep me enough to drop the price substantially. And it's cheaper than any of the comparison site quotes, plus I only have a compulsory £100 excess and no voluntary for that price which is very good.

I’ve been with Aviva since I bought my first car in early 2018 - I looked around both times renewal has come up but they were way cheaper than any other reputable insurer (first ever quotes were around £1200-1400 for everyone else, £800 for them) and it’s gone down by £100 a year since.

No claims or anything so haven’t really had to deal with them other than informing them I had a front/rear dash-cam fitted but the app they have is good, easy to use etc.

I've been with lv for 3 years, their base quote is usually £30-£40 dearer than the top quote on confused but I've found their loadings for modifications (power and suspension) are reasonable, plus they don't charge administration on green cards (not that I went overseas this year but usually go over 3-4 times).

I got stung with a £26 admin fee one year every time I arranged a green card, and I moved house so ended up paying over £100 just in fees.

not comparethemarket ! - is there any evidence yet, that they have similar exclusivity lowest price car premium deals, like they have been convicted, today,
by regulatory body, for the the house insurance market ?
I don't use comparison sites exclusively anyway, but reducing competition in this way, is a cartel. ...

primarily, there advert is just annoying.

Sky insurance sorted me out this year for the modifications, everyone else I have called has gone you should go with them for the price. All mods covered in case of an idiot hitting me.

Comparison sites first and then direct quotes with the cheapest 2-3 to see if they come out cheaper.

It was only ever Admiral and esure that were competitive until I turned 28, got married and had a kid. Then all of a sudden, lots of other companies seemed happy to quote cheaper.

CTM were found guilty of anti-competitive clauses with providers for HOME insurance, not car insurance. I was with Direct Line for a decade but when they refused to reduce my renewal premium it was £200 more than for some other providers so I switched to Ageas. Apparently they're massive on the continent.

FWIW I'll never use Admiral again.

Hi what modifications have you made if you don't mind me asking?

Sort of relevant to the thread - I normally just use confused and the meerkat to compare then take the cheapest one but for the first time my renewal quote is the cheapest by about 10%. Did make sure that all the details like excess and miles and all that were the same too.

I do remember that they changed the law that they can't increase your premium for no reason come renewal, was that right?

As much as I slate Admiral for being useless, the process of adding modifications to my policy was painless. I logged into the online portal, clicked a button, selected that I've added wheels, suspension, and exhaust, clicked submit and it said the price had gone up £17, which I duly paid, and I immediately got an email with updated documents.

Every insurance company should have a system like this in place. You can even change your car on there!
