GPU Wars:Who is winning?

If you follow discord/telegram stock channels you can easily get a card for near rrp.... there have been loads of 3080 drops recently near rrp prices. Personally bang for buck id take the 3080.

This:10GB will be enough until it's not but by then it won't matter as you'll be running a slide show.

I think you're missing the point, if you can upscale, downscale or whatever and not see the difference then the point becomes moot. Consoles don't produce the same image quality as top end GPUs or at least not in independent tests or for my eyes. Therefore the banal 'buy a console then' statement doesn't really contribute a whole lot.

I have been here for years and have seen the pc crowd chat s... About how upscaling is rubbish.

Apparently now it's a good thing!!

Nvidia boys!!

How come upscaling has become acceptable!?¿

"upscaling" isn't really accurate. DLSS is a wonderful concept and it's genuinely surprising how well it works given its infancy.

think of how sight works, you don't actual "see" the pixels of the world, your eyes do and then it is processed in a way that makes sense for your brain. DLSS is essentially doing the same thing, taking a rendered image and rebuilding it as "it should be" using machine learning.

as a technical feat that we're at a point where its already producing an image that is nigh indistinguishable from its native counterpart while largely matching the performance of the subject resolution is incredibly impressive, even if you have no interest in using it. it's a complete different paradigm to clumsy one size fits all upscaling techniques. proper sci-fi stuff.

Care to qualify that one?

bang for buck? 6800XT £639 on a competitor site. It is faster than 3080 @ 1440p across the board and faster than 3090 in a few games. @4K it is on par with 3080. And it’s got 16GB vram vs 10GB. While the 3080 FE is nearly £700. How is that bang for buck exactly. All of this performance is without SAM. With SAM 6800XT pulls well ahead of 3080 @1440p almost matching 3090 level and even at 4K takes a lead on 3080.

the best £/frame card is the 6800. It is epic. With SAM you are effectively getting a 6800XT (non SAM) performance.

I do love a bit of trumpism in general chat but when the “alternative fact” lacks any kind of fact it is just complete falsehood

Upscaling then!?

The Bots are winning
I don’t think they are. I have seen quite a lot of people trying it off load their scalped 3070 today. Not many are being bitten. Only the desperate and uninformed are paying over the odds prices.

I think the nvidia cards value has taken a bit of a hit today.

Given that AMD have nearly doubled the performance on their previous flagship, I'd say they look very favourable over the next 2-3 years.

Once covid dies down and production catches up we might see some well priced cards available.

6800xts were £600 at a competitor, briefly, where I tried to get one and failed. Ocuk have definitely hiked the pre order price. I wouldn't recommend anyone pay that and just wait for stock.
As for which is better at the listed ocuk prices. The 6800xt is. If they were both MSRP then that depends on your needs. If you want 4k or Ray tracing and don't mind spending 50quid more the 3080 is worthwhile but for 1440p I'd get the 6800xt. I'm also assuming it will age better and would bet on more games like the new assassins creed or dirt 5 level of performance on the horizon for the radeon, due to the consoles.

I want to see some 6800XT VR benchmarks, but I would take a 3080 or a 6800XT and be happy with either.

I like the novelty of the FE cooler, so if I could get whatever, I would probably go with the 3080 FE. Nice clean looking card.

However, AMDs offering is strong enough that I'm not waiting on any 3080 if a 6800XT is available when a 3080 isn't.

i think someone posted be benches earlier and the 3080 had a decent lead on the 6800xt, plus Nvidia now supports DLLS in VR games and amd doesn't yet
