RTX 3000 Series GSync - Samsung NU8000 55"?

Hi guys,

Been following these forums a while, but this is my first post! I'm hoping the community might be able to provide some clarification for me on my first proper PC build (for home use, had to build a couple of PCs for work!). Been gaming on a laptop for strategy games and an Xbox One for RPGs the last few years.

I currently own a 55" NU8000 Samsung TV from 2018. I know it can do FreeSync over HDMI with AMD graphics cards and with various different games consoles: 48-60fps at 4k input, and 20-120fps at 1440p input. It has HDMI 2.0b (no HDMI 2.1), but it was essentially the bottom of the Samsung range in 2018 that opted to support some of the HDMI 2.1 spec such as ALLM and FreesSync. Put simply I love the TV, and have no desire to replace it over the lifetime of this build (hoping ~4-5 years, then to start to look at upgrades for the PC or TV etc).

NVidia added GSync compatibility to many FreeSync displays last year, I have seen a plethora of mixed responses online about whether this does or does not work with Samsung TVs... for example after driver updates they do appear to work with the Q80t from the last year. I cannot find any information relating to this specific TV though. Certainly not any information from the last two months, where driver updates may have changed this.

I'm wondering does anyone have the same TV or a Samsung TV QLED from the same year (2018) and either of the new RTX 3070/3080 graphics cards? If you do, can you confirm if GSync does or does not work with the current drivers (obviously this is could always change later with firmware updates etc)? If possible could you provide the firmware version number of the TV and 3070 driver for posterity (even if it doesn't work)?

As I'm targeting 4k60 or 1440p20-120 and I have less money than Jeff Bezos, I'm deciding between the RX 6800 or RTX 3070. I do not care much for ray tracing (its still very much a luxury feature in my mind), therefore the primary decider between these two cards for me is screen syncing tech, price and availability. While AMD guarantees the former, I'm not sure Ill be able to get one before Christmas and the Nvidia card is cheaper. Further comments of course welcome.

Further information on my build if desired:
CPU: 5600x - already purchased, got very lucky on the F5 release day battle. Hoping it will help with endgame Stellaris taking an age
Motherboard: b550m Auros Pro
Memory: Crucial Ballistics 16gb 3200Mhz
PSU: Not bought yet, graphics card contingent

Got a Samsung Qled last year with Freesync, 2070 and 3070 don't do Gsync on it.

When I tried the 2070 the Tv displayed Only Amd Gfx are supported.

When I tried the 3070, it didn't display only AMD this time but I enabled Gsync via NCP but it doesn't work.

Don't have the Tv Model no. to hand.

Recently got myself a 75" Samsung Q90T (2020 model) but found the same lack of info online regarding G-Sync support/compatible displays.

Officially, it is not a G-Sync compatible display.

But I did come across a Reddit conversation where a guy with the same TV as mine had tested it with his Nvidia GPU using the Pendulum test and he posted the results and it worked flawlessly. Although I can't remember if that was a 3000 series Nvidia GPU or the previous generation.

But while not a while lot of displays are listed as G-Sync compatible, many actually are but just haven't been fully tested by Nvidia yet.

Not sure that helps for your specific display but it's at least somewhat promising for users with PC's hooked up to TVs.

Doing a new build myself and was holding off on buying a GPU until the RX 6000 launch so I could have full Freesync support, but since the reviews I'm now thinking of going with Nvidia 3000 series for the full 4K performance and Ray Tracing capabilities.

Decisions, decisions :D

Edit: as far as I remember there are specific settings you need to make in Nvidia GPU display settings if the TV is not listed as G-Sync compatible. If I find the Reddit post again I'll pass it on to you, might help

Hi all, thanks for the responses so far!

I think I came across the same post on Reddit, I also found a post on NVidia's forums of someone getting to work on a 2018 Samsung TV but with no confirmation of model number (QLED or not, HDMI 2.1 etc). I hope whatever card you choose it suits your needs and you're happy with your build :)

Gsync on free sync TVs or monitors only works with DisplayPort.
HDMI 2.1 is supposed to work with gsync.

I believe you are correct here. The problem is some TV manufacturers have opted into the parts of the HDMI 2.1 spec with HDMI 2.0b but are very coy about compatibility.

In this regard I believe 100% that GSync will never work from an RTX 2000 card or older -> These only have HDMI 2.0/display port, NVidia on their end as the transmitter of the signal never enabled FreeSync over HDMI. Maybe they cant over firmware, or to be honest its a good incentive to upgrade your card.

Samsung aren't specific about if the VRR they enable is HDMI VRR, FreeSync or both as the receiver. Samsung support don't seem know or don't care when I've asked them. With the new Nvidia cards which support HMDI 2.1, HDMI VRR should be supported as that is in the spec? (framed under GSync compatible or suitable marketing label).

Hence, firmware permitting, I think it might be possible for FreeSync to work with an RTX 3000 card, to a HDMI 2.0b TV, if the manufacturers play nice and the right features are enabled. Essentially GSync but bandwidth limited to HDMI 2.0b spec (4k60 etc.).

I would take a punt and try it out but its quite a lot of money to gamble on a feature that may or may not work. Hence as annoying as it sounds to ask and I don't mean to bother people, real world evidence would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe I'm unscrupulously wrong in my understanding here, but I'm a Medical Physicist not a software engineer. :P

Just to add that I used my LG 8100pla tv without any sync and it performs just as good ( smooth ) as my LG monitor with gsync enabled.

Ah, this is the point that was eluding me... I knew there was something. :)

The Samsung NU8000 won't ever support Gsync because it doesn't have HDMI 2.1

Guys your information is wrong/ out of date.

Nvidia support freesync over HDMI now on 20,30 series.

I use gsync everyday on my 3080 and my samsung 2018 qled.
It works flawlessly just switch on freesync premium on the TV and the 3080 will automatically turn on gsync.

:) I am sure nvidia could do it with 2.0 but I don’t think they will.

They can and they have already done it. It's been working for over 6 months now

Looks like this needs to be settled. :)

I'll hook up my 3080 rig to my NU8000 and post back shortly.

@Bralor

Just a quick video to show it working.
https://youtu.be/xfsth1HZkUE
Not best quality I know.

This is 2018 q8dna with a 3080. Freesync premium works perfectly (much better than the 5700xt ever did)

Just switch it on and the card does the rest.

I play 4k mainly with game motion plus set to 5/5 and it's super smooth 60fps instant response in game with no tearing.

That's great to see, and exactly what I'm targeting for my gaming experience! Thank you for the video, this has given me a great deal of hope.

If you still manage to this today, I'd really appreciate it to put my mind at ease and the issue to bed!

Mixed results, I'm afraid.

When I enable Freesync Premium then it shows options for Gsync. I can confirm that Gsync is then enabled in game but it causes black screen flicker and loss of source on the TV.

It doesn't look like it's fully supported on that model.

Sound like you have the wrong box ticked in the gsync menu

Some users said if they get flickering it can be the hdmi cable used, I’ve only read this for Amd users having flickering issues though.

What you mean?

In the setup gsync menu in the Nvidia control panel if you have the wrong box ticked it will do what your saying.
On mine I have gsync, gsync compatible ticked and enable for windowed and full screen ticked the others are blank.

Obviously on the TV you will also need the hdmi uhd color box ticked.

It would be a shame if it doesn't work on the 8000 model.

I know from av forums it works on the 2018 q9 and from personal experience it works on the 2018 q8dn.

I would suggest also making sure you change it from pc mode to console on the TV. These 2018 ones do weird things when input is labelled as PC.
