Is BMW Extended Warranty Worth It?

I had the extended warranty on my 35iS, only used it once but it's worth it for the level of service alone. Came and picked up from my driveway, brand new 4GC courtesy car which I had for 2 weeks and all sorted with no input from me at all. The issue was only minor, but took a lot of investigation (hence the 2 weeks courtesy) which would cost a lot on its own.

On a sidenote, I had MHD Stage 1+ map on it at various times in it's life and BMW saw no signs of it. The chap did a very long scan on the car from his van and was moaning at the time about an M4 he'd just been to see which 'had a dodgy map on it', so it seems that MHD may be harder to notice. Anecdotal but there you go.
I also have my 35is under extended warratty at 65000 miles at £52 per month and I had (another) cracked filter housing. Would have been £470 fix.
The 35is is full of expensive gear and has some common issues, especially the electronic shocks, turbo wastegates, fuel pump and gearbox oil leaks - all of them very expensive to fix - thousands.

Do you not want roadside assistance? Mine is £522, £100 excess but with roadside assistance.

A good point, as my other car (Old 2004 M3 Convertible) is over 16 years old, I have to use greenflag to cover that, and I thought it'd make sense to just add the X3 as a second car to that policy which I think is only £30 more vs the £80 if adding roadside assistance to the warranty

Roadside assistance is actually free and included within the warranty, but it doesn't cover home start.

The £80 option is actually a full assistance package with replacement cars, hotel cover, etc etc.

Comprehensive (with roadside)

Annual£ | Monthly£ | Excess £

1060 | 111 | 0

863 | 92 | 100

Drive line (with roadside)

Annual£ | Monthly£ | Excess £

716 | 77 | 0

602 | 65 | 100

494 | 56 | 250

Prices were for a 66 plate F10 with 18k miles.

Seems a bit steep to me.

It's annoyingly expensive and especially when you consider an X3 XDrive 35d with every available option is a hundreds of pounds a year cheaper 'becuase not 5 Series' when mechanically and electrically it's all the same stuff.

I guess if I do go for it I'll take the £250 excess option on comprehnsive. As if I make a single claim, it just brings it back up to the £100 excess cost pretty much. Lol

Yep, My 2014 F11 535D MSport, fully loaded, is on 59000 miles and runs me £92 per month with £100 excess and roadside assistance. It is not cheap. Neither are the repairs. You may get away without it. You may not. I had to have £1600 work done last year for simple parking sensors not working, so I am glad I have the policy. I do about 9000 miles a year in it.

I used to (for three years after the NCW expired) pay annually but wanted get in on the monthly scheme ready for when the car goes over 60000. If you want to take out the policy AFTER 60000 the policy is stupid money and I would get rid of the car.

My thinking on this warranty business...... My car is fabulous, A1 condition, goes like the clappers and is heavily depreciated. If I wanted a newer one I would have to put £25000 at least to get the more modern version of the same car. This £25000 would depreciate again to nothing in 2-3 years at a cost of £700-800 per month in depreciation. Compared against that, the £92 per month to be covered by BMW in my really nice, current car is a decent proposition and compromise I think, especially since the depreciation curve is no longer so fearsome.

It is a bit mean of the German car makers to only offer three years warranty on a new car IMO, especially considering they are a so called "premium" brand. The Japanese and some others now offer 5 years NCW, such is their confidence. It must be a major money spinner big time for the Germans hence them sticking to three years.

I also pay £52 per month on my 35is 2013.

Which just makes the 5 Series price even more annoying. It's not based on the actual risk, its based on the fact its a 5 Series. A Z4 35iS DCT with folding metal roof is hardly a less risky car to have on cover, yet it's almost half the price to warrant. A bugbear of mine, can you tell?

The worry is that a £90 a month it's so close to the borderline of being worth the bother. But the fact it exists is one of the reasons why I like running these cars - I have absolutely no desire to go back into the world of random indys every time something needs doing.

Agreed, and yes I can tell ;) The 35is is generally reliable but has had some expensive issues such as turbo wastegate rattles, electronic shock absorbers, HP fuel pump, gear box sump cracks, all of which are thousands to fix. Yes it costs only £52. The 5 series is almost bomb proof and yet costs double. It seems absurd.

You're paying more than my e92 m3:p. I went for 250 excess with no breakdown and it's 853 or something like that. That was a lump sum though. I'm surprised you're not on a petrol though at only 9000 a year, surely you run the risk of dpf issues?

Concur entirely, and do wonder if, I had swallowed my pride / whatever and gone with the warranty and thus my e38 would still be on the road - despite it being much more than the cost of a warranty on a V8 e39 - had I opted for it maybe my car would still be on my driveway now.... (it was broken for spares in Romania in the end apparently) what did for me is exactly your point, its a 7er, therefore, it commands ludicrous premiums, I couldn't swallow that and they really take the Michael.

But, by ****. I wish I had taken it! :o :D

There is nothing inherently simper about the 20d really.
Can I take out annual at the moment and in a couple of years switch to monthly before the 60k?

Looking at comprehensive with £250 excess. I'll take care of small things, and keep the cover incase the gear box, unlikely as it is, explodes. I figure the lower excess are aimed at people that would claim for small stuff etc.

Need to sort it tonight otherwise warranty will lapse tonight.

Not sure if that means the price will go up at midnight lol.

You can swap to monthly at renewal, yes.

I don't personally see the value of the £250 excess. The only things I've ever had go wrong on an F10 have been small value items.
