I want to get my kids some hue strip lights to go under some shelves in their rooms.

But I want to be able to make sure that one can't control the lights in the other's room. I can't find any answers as to if this is possible using the official hue app or a 3rd party ap. Any advice?

Cheers all !

The lights in interested in are the v4 strip lights. Looks like the kids will be able to use the Bluetooth app on their phones to court the lights...

This leads me to the next question....

I'd like to control some existing lights. Are there hue compatible light switches I can wire in to control "dumb" lights?

No, but there are alternatives like LightWave RF that focus on that market.

You can get Hue plugs which hook into the Hue app and allow you to turn dumb lights on and off.

I think he meant ceiling lights, but good point. The Hue versions are too expensive IME, you can pick up the same things for half the price and run it all seamlessly with an Alexa routine.

Lots of good advice here....

I'm talking about ceiling lights. My idea was to have a motion sensor on the downstairs hall light (has about 8 small light bulbs for which there are no hue equivalents) so that it turns on when we come in. But it's on a 3 gang/2way switch which makes it a pain to replace with the light wave stuff.

I've ordered two Hue v4 strip lights for the kids to go on the underside of the shelves above their desks - they can each use bluetooth to control their own so no shennanigans.

Still really like the whole idea of smart lighting but it's just a nightmare trying to work out the various combinations. The living room has 6 GU10 ceiling spots on a dimmer. Replacing all 6 with hue bulbs is v.pricey when a lightwave switch would do the same job/ But then the lightwave switch won't work with hue unless I setup an OpenHAB bridge.

As someone once said, "the nice thing about standards is that there are so many to chose from".
