Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone who owns a Mazda 3, specifically a 2013-2019 sport nav model, knows if it has a heated front windscreen?

My Google fu skills are failing me and I can't find a clear answer. The cars on auto trader I can see have what looks like a heated windscreen button but nothing in the description / features list that states it. The used dealers are all seemingly clueless too.

If it does have one, do you also know if it is the heated element type like on fords and not just a button that channels hot air to the windscreen?

Thanks :)

From my own Google-Fu, it looks like there is no heated screen, just the usual "hurricane mode onto the screen with as much heat as we can muster" button that you get on most climate control implementations.

Out 68 plate sport nav also no heated screen.
I really miss it after having it on the previous Focus, glad my Mondeo has it. Best feature ever.

Didn't Ford hold the patent till 2018 which prevented other manufacturers from using them or is that a myth?

I had a base spec Mondeo that had one.

I read 2005 was when the patent ran out, however that seems wrong as you would think every manufacturer would have adopted it by now.

It's one of those bits of tech that make life so much easier that I'm not sure I'm prepared to lose it. I finished work at 9pm for 3 years and it was a godsend for 4-5 months of the year.

If it's anything like my Mazda6 the air supposedly gets circulated via the aircon so it dries the air as well, then being heated before blowing on the screen. Seems to clear the screen, but not quickly.

I love mine. The heated screen was one of the factors I stayed with Ford when I got my car.

I drive peasant wagons so I'm often up at 3am to go to work so anything that gives me an extra 5 minutes in bed is a win.

I did have a heated front screen on a Mazda 3 a few years ago BUT I cannot remember which year. Had 2 CX-5 since and wasn't an option on these. Must have been pre 2015?

A guy I work with has a Mazda 3 with a heated screen, I'm sure it's around 2012-2013. At that age they were based on the Ford Focus anyway.

Ford use to part own Mazda which is why some probably had it back then. I think the patent did only expire in 2018 so most cars out now won't have one.

Yes I hadn't appreciated vw one didn't have wires,

Not sure if any of the ev's now have these, as a standard, maybe their instant heat from a blower/heat-pump is more efficient though ?

Traditional heated windscreens contain metal wires which can be a visibility hazard in some lighting conditions, hence why you tend to find them in your rear window, but not at the front. Volkswagen have tackled the issue by designing a thin electrically conductive layer of silver within the glass, providing heat by converting electric current of no more than 400 to 500 watts. Heating up without the use of any filament wires, the windscreen will gently melt away ice, without obscuring the driver’s view; not only that, be re-misting will also be kept at bay.

The new windscreen will also feature tiny filaments to heat the windscreen wipers, to prevent them becoming stuck in ice.

The climate windscreen isn’t just for winter, however. When the weather warms up, the silver layer will help to shield the vehicle from heat, keeping it up to 15 degrees cooler than tinted glass solutions; when a car is parked in the sun, the system will also work to reduce heat in the cabin as fast as possible, allowing the driver and passengers stay comfortable when they re-enter.
