I've had a 1TB SSD (Crucial MX500 in a Ugreen USB 3.1 Caddy) plugged into a read USB port since last night. I downloaded 2 PS4 games and installed 2 from disc to that drive.
I have only played one game from the external drive since installing. Powered the console up/down a few times since I added this drive and so far I've not had any issues.
However, the majority of my gaming at the moment s PS5 titles from the built-in drive.

How are the load times using the external SSD?

It's hard to answer that one
On my PS4 Pro I'd fitted an SSD internally and was also using an external SSD for additional storage.
So I was already getting better load times on my PS4 than say someone still using the stock HDD.

It's not blistering, but then PS4 games have never been optimised to use an SSD - they load faster just due to the nature of a solid-state device.

If I've got a few spare minutes tonight, I'll load up a couple of PS4 games from my external drive and then move them to the internal drive and see if there is any difference.

Good point. Mine was an unsuccessful launch day pre-order.

Turn on the PS5 just now and it starts to download updates for War Thunder, Miles Morales, and Prime video...

I have both the 'stay connected to internet' under power save turned on, and both the auto download and auto install under automatic updates.

This is the buggiest console I’ve ever owned. Past 3 days I’ve gone to use it and it either gets stuck on a black screen with a pulsing blue light, or a white light. Then you can press the power button and it’ll say it’s going into rest mode, then after another 30 seconds I can press power again and it’ll start up. In all it takes 2-3mins just to get the thing to boot up from rest.
