3080 FE temps - is this normal?

I know this card runs hot, but this seems to be hotter than I'd expect.

Just idling on the desktop with 1 browser window open I can watch the temperature gradually creep up from 30° to 65° where it eventually stabilises.

In games it very quickly reaches the thermal limit which appears to be 83°. I've had a couple of incidents of RDR2 freezing and having to crash out, not sure if that's related or not though, otherwise performance is good and all seems stable.

Case is fairly well ventilated, but could be better I guess. 280mm radiator on the front drawing air in, and 140mm at the top/120mm at the rear. Last card in this case was a 5700XT which ran much cooler.

What sort of temperatures are other 3080 FE users seeing? I'm tempted to re-apply thermal paste, but seems a bit drastic for a 5 day old card :)

Thing is I suppose that the 3080 produces tons of heat. I would guess here the issue is that all your air coming in to the case is being controlled by the CPU temp and it's just not enough. I would try upping the rpm of the fans on the radiator so you are drawing in a lot more air.
You could always do what DontRockTheBoat said, you will need more fans for the front of the case.

Not seen mine go over 75c yet but not played that many games tbh or checked frequently. 75c i think is in the latest COD game. If I had RDR I'd give it a try and report back, maybe someone else will.
Desktop, day to day, can go over 50c. Not sure when the fans kick in but they're not always on like with the 20 series, so you're not going to achieve a constant low temp without havign them constantly running.
Doubt its an issue tbh.

Seems a bit toasty. If you manually set the gpu fan you'll drop the temp a fair bit. Set a more aggressive curve lower down and it'll help stop temp soaring.

Don't know how it correlates this time around but in days of old, hot cards used to be good clocker when the temp is kept in check (WC).

Thanks for the replies. Appreciate the warm air coming in isn't ideal, however the 5700XT never went past 75ish and I know that's a hot card. It feels like there's something not right. I'll have a go tonight with the front fans at max to see what sort of difference it makes.

Have set a custom fan curve up and it's a lot better (and also quite a bit louder) when idling, but still hits 83° straight away under load, even with the fan blasting at max.

I watched the GN teardown of the card and the paste looked pretty shoddy, so got a feeling that replacing could help a lot, but obviously would rather avoid ripping the thing apart just yet :)

Aside from the game crashing this sounds normal to me. Not a 3080, but when I had my 3090 I wanted my fan curve to be a bit more aggressive due to the way the card would heat up. I ended up taking the side off the case (glass window, vertical gpu near it) because despite having decent airflow through the case it wasn’t enough to keep things cool. My temps dropped a lot after that, but it wasn’t an ideal solution.
I still think the stock fan curve wasn’t aggressive enough, even with the case side off. But that is obviously the trade off the manufacturer went for to reduce noise levels.

Mine seems to idle around 29/30deg with fans off and peaks around 63 degrees on load with fans at 65% but it appears I have a cool one..

According to TPU the 5700XT is a 225W card and the FE is 320W card so that is an extra 95W of heat being dumped into the case. Atm I have one of the cheaper model 3080s (Gigabyte Eagle) undervolted to run 1920 @ 900mV and its hits about 74C max in my very sub optimal case (5x 140 intakes and 1x 140 exhaust :p) Average 69C in the 3DMark Timespy stress test - https://www.3dmark.com/tsst/1515675

Could try an undervolt until you can optmize the rad/fans ?

Yeah undervolt is on my list of things to try, but want to make sure there's not something fundamentally wrong first. Seems like it is running quite hot, but maybe within expectations...

get yourself gpu-z and have a look at what voltage your card is sitting at.
I undervolted my 3090, from 1.08v to max out 0.9v with a minor drop in benchmarks but keeping the max temp at 66C with the silent fan setting.
These Ampere cards are begging to be undervolted to improve temps and performance

Mine runs hot and loud too, reaching 80C with fans at 2000rpm. I'm currently using my case without the side panel on so the card has access to plenty of ambient air but the top suck-through fan is heavily restricted by the pump hovering 1cm above the exhaust.

Have began to look into undervolting and have seen significant reductions in power draw and therefore noise and temps have dropped too.

Love the fact your rad doubles up as a HDD cooler :D

My RDR2 is updating but my temps with a 3090 are 28 idle and 75 full load with COD:BOCW, if that helps.

Case is a Fractal Design Define R6, 2 fans at the front pulling in air and one blowing out the back of the case. CPU is air cooled with stock cooler.

Ok. tried with RDR2 and it peaks at 80. When I did my 30 minute Furmark run last week it peaked at 82. All stable.

Mine happy sits at 26c idle and 73c in game, that's with power and temps limits maxed out with mild overclock fans at around 65-70%. Although that could be due to my ambient temperature being quiet low (I don't feel the cold)

Is freezing in here also. If it wasn't a bit of a faff, I'd definitely take a look at the contact the coolers's getting. It's the speed it goes to the peak temp, and also how it just steadily creeps up to 65 when I'm doing nothing that doesn't look right to me.

Lol the old gpu just chilling in the loop :p
