My son wants to upgrade is CPU and is looking at the Ryzen 5 3600X. I've checked and it's compatible with his motherboard.
His current GPU is an AMD Radeon RX 580 8gb.
Is this going to work ok or is it better to upgrade that too? If so, which would be the best budget one to go for?
I am completely clueless when it comes to anything computer related.

No, he's been saying that some of his games are laughing (whatever that means). He's also struggling to play some of the newer games such as call of duty and watch dogs legion as he's only got a Ryzen 3 CPU at the moment

Lol Lagging meaning its slowing down , now that could be due to 3 things cpu, memory or gpu. This will depend on the game and resoloution hes playing at but not going to go to deap into this.

Have a chat with him and see whats his plan's as he knows to upgrade the cpu he probsblly knows a lot more.

You can always come back and ask further questions. If you use thd quote button it will send a notification and i could help further once you've found out more info.

whats his current set up spec
It's a Corsair Carbide spec delta ATX RGB mid tower.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB
No overclocking (no idea what that means or if it's relevant)
Power supply: Corsair Vengeance Series 650M 650W 80+
I know it's got 8gb RAM which he wants to 16GB

Oh yeah, I meant to say lagging
So I've had a chat to him and he just thought he needs to upgrade the CPU to make the games run better. He doesn't really know much tbh.

With a bios update almore all older board will take ryzen 3000. Buy a 3600 16gb of 3200/3600mhz ram and for now keep the gpu.

Gpu prices right now are stupid
